Succession War arc · 19 pages · 40 characters
Key facts in this chapter
Barrigen is under arrest for a surprise attack and theft of attention. Sakata is identified as one of the 3rd Prince's private soldiers. The 6th Queen Seiko is suspected of complicity in Barrigen's murder and an assassination plot against the 14th Prince. Chief Judge Clarepatro presides over the 1st floor judge's room. Royal family special protection rights are invoked and cannot be superseded.
Scene takes place on the 2nd day at 9:45 AM Location includes room 1014 and a formal hall aboard the ship Kurapika is present and addressing the group Discussion centers on schedule adjustments and a two-week promise Weapons are prohibited during the upcoming lesson
Queen Oito and Prince Woble are in the bedroom Guards discuss a mission involving the prince Meal tray labeled 16 is shown at the end of the page Conversation occurs in corridors and royal quarters aboard the ship
Barrigen is the heavyset man on the floor. A handgun is visibly drawn and aimed during the confrontation. The scene takes place inside a dining hall with food trays.
Barrigen is explicitly named in dialogue. The word "NEN" is mentioned as newly learned by one character. Prince Woble is referenced in connection to a Nen beast.
Parasitic Nen beasts cannot be seen by ordinary people. Conjured objects can appear ordinary yet be visible to normal people. Higher risk in limitations increases attack power. The succession war involves 14 people with parasitic Nen beasts.
Limitations and vows crumbling would make Nen beasts disappear. Kurapika plans to examine others using his chains. One withdrawal from the succession war affects all Nen beasts. A large aquatic creature appears in stormy waters.
A large, panicked man with a round face and slicked-back hair shouts in distress as motion lines streak behind him. "WHY AM I BEING ARRESTED!?" he yells. Nearby, a small orange-haired girl stares in shock. Another voice cries out, "HEY! HEY! WAIT!! WHY!?" In the lower panels, Sakata, one of the 3rd Prince's private soldiers, stands with a phone to his ear. A stern man dismisses his request: "YOUR REQUEST IS DISMISSED." Another figure explains, "BARRIGEN WAS CAUGHT IN A SURPRISE ATTACK AFTER YOU STOLE EVERYONE'S ATTENTION." The scene shifts to a formal room where the Chief Judge speaks: "THE ROYAL FAMILY'S SPECIAL RIGHT OF PROTECTION CANNOT BE SUPERSEDED." A voice continues, "FOR THE REASONS THAT THIS CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE CAN EASILY BE DELIBERATELY FAKED, AND I REQUEST YOU RESTRAIN AND BRING A CASE AGAINST THE 6TH QUEEN SEIKO FOR SUSPICION OF COMPLICITY IN THE MURDER OF BARRIGEN AND AN ASSASSINATION PLOT AGAINST THE 14TH PRINCE." The Chief Judge concludes, "THAT IS ALL." She sits at her desk labeled "1ST FLOOR - CHIEF JUDGE'S ROOM CHIEF JUDGE CLAREPATRO," holding a pen, with a calm but firm expression.
A large color illustration shows a young person with light hair and large golden eyes looking upward with a serious expression, a single tear visible. Prominent Japanese text reads "連載再開!!" (Serialization resumes!!) in circular frames. The Hunter × Hunter logo dominates the bottom in bold red and black letters. Text at the top announces the return of the series with intense death matches inside the ship. A small circular inset shows the panicked face from the previous page. Additional text includes "No.371 ◆ MISSION", author credit "冨樫 義博", a QR code, and promotional notes about the next issue on February 2nd. A small panel from the manga is visible in the corner with the website "http://marumaru.in/".

On the second day at 9:45 AM, a vast ocean stretches under a bright sky with a dark shape visible on the horizon. Inside room 1014, a voice confirms "YES." while another asks "THEN THERE'S NO WAY?" In the grand hall with its checkered floor and ornate walls, a group of suited men stand facing one another. A central man in a dark suit gestures with both arms outstretched, declaring that the matter is being handled here and warning that a similar case will probably occur again. He stresses that during the lesson, weapons must not be used. Kurapika, with light hair and large eyes, stands in the foreground and states firmly that the ones to discuss a change of schedule are not them, adding that everyone should have come with that condition from the beginning. In smaller panels below, suited figures confer near a large clock; one man on the phone insists any later and he cannot guarantee keeping the two-week promise, while another voice says they will let everyone have until 10 to decide whether or not to continue as planned.

In a corridor, two guards in puffy uniforms stand near a doorway. One guard tells the other not to interfere in his mission. A speech bubble references "THE PRINCE'S MISSION" RIGHT? Inside a lavishly decorated bedroom, Queen Oito holds Prince Woble while speaking with a guard; she asks if it is okay for him to go with them and inquires whether His Highness would mind coming with us. In the hallway, two more guards stand watch as figures walk away in the distance. Close-up panels show a guard with a headband speaking intensely about staking one's life on it and questioning if the other can fail. Another guard replies that the prince should have said it and that the progress is left in their hands. A laughing voice exclaims that being with you is such fun, answered by "BEING WITHOUT YOU. PERFECT." The page ends with a close-up of a meal tray containing a bagel sandwich, fries, soup, a donut, water, and utensils marked with the number 16.

A young woman with her hair in a ponytail stares ahead with wide eyes, her expression shifting from neutral to sudden shock. In the dining hall below, the same woman stands beside a long table laden with food trays, gripping the back of a wooden chair. Nearby, a spiky-haired man in a dark suit raises one finger to his lips in a silencing gesture while a short-haired girl in a suit stands beside him, holding a small handgun pointed forward. The short-haired girl turns slightly and speaks firmly. "ANSWER THEM. I'M GOING TO ASK YOU TWO QUESTIONS." In the hall, the spiky-haired man and short-haired girl confront a heavyset man sprawled on the floor. The man on the floor looks up in panic, shouting "HIYA!" and "WHAT IS THIS!?" as the short-haired girl keeps the gun trained on him.

Barrigen recoils with wide eyes and raised hands, shouting "IT WAS CERTAINLY NOT ME!!" The short-haired girl stares at him and asks, "ARE YOU THE ONE WHO ATTACKED BARRIGEN?" A woman with light hair clutches her face in distress, exclaiming that yesterday was the first time she had ever heard the word "NEN" and denying any ability to use it. Barrigen sweats heavily, asking why he would do such a thing and claiming he is sorry. The short-haired girl states that the people who overlap with both incidents are limited. She then declares the types are different and that it is not possible Prince Woble's Nen beast did this. Barrigen looks up anxiously while the short-haired girl continues questioning him in the dining hall.

Kurapika stands with one hand raised, explaining the nature of parasitic Nen beasts. On the other hand, those snakes were able to be witnessed by everyone in the room. Diagrams illustrate the difference: a Nen user can see certain conjured forms while a normal person cannot. The targeted people will appear like they're being possessed by a ghost. The prince's Nen beasts are all parasitic types that were born in the ritual ceremony and they cannot be seen by ordinary people. In short, things can be made that look like ordinary objects and can be seen by normal people. This is a risk of limitations. As the degree of difficulty increases, so does the power of its attack. For example, the risk of being discovered by conjuring snakes that even ordinary humans can see is high, right? To put it simply, a Nen user's image and the level of risk is different. Nen is like one big knot. Isn't that... in the end just a completely different ability? Especially with this current succession war where 14 people are living with parasitic Nen beasts requires an immense... On the other hand, a parasitic type that can't even be seen by Nen users to have the condition that ordinary people cannot see it, then the user must bear a lot of risk as it would require the use of a significant amount of energy. Kurapika's eyes widen sharply in realization as the impact of the explanation hits.

The spiky-haired man clutches his head and asks if it is a headache because of that. What is it, Kurapika? Kurapika stands silently with a neutral expression. Another suited man stands nearby. The spiky-haired man wonders if the people here are cleared. Kurapika replies that he is fine. Large text states that then the limitations and vows will crumble and everyone's Nen beasts will disappear. That even one person withdraws from this succession war. A massive whale-like creature surfaces in dark waters under a stormy sky. In a wooden-floored room, Kurapika stands with his back to the group. If possible, I'll try to search for an opportunity to examine everyone else with my chains, but in the meantime could you guys inconspicuously observe everyone around you.

In a vast wooden hall with striped flooring, a group of people stands gathered while a lone figure remains at the far end. A short-haired attendant in a dark suit with an H emblem confirms the situation aloud. "That's correct. The princes' orders. So nobody's withdrawn? Then, let's begin." She instructs everyone present: "First, could each and everyone of you freely grasp you left and right hands together." Several men in the foreground, including a stern man with a scar, a curly-haired man, and others, clasp their hands as directed. In a separate room below, Queen Oito sits on a bed beside the infant Prince Woble while Shimano stands nearby. A voice asks, "Have you done it? Using this grasping technique, you will be able to roughly separate the trends when learning Nen."

Shimano faces Queen Oito and the baby in the room. Oito asks why Shimano stayed. Shimano replies that she understands and deeply regrets making the situation seem against her will. She notes the compensation for staying is not worth it and that people like Oito would have been fortunate to quit already. Shimano thanks Oito for staying and explains her family has served the royal family for generations. A flashback shows her parents regretting not dedicating themselves fully until death and urging her to do so. Shimano admits she unintentionally blurted out things causing a misunderstanding. She reflects that although the situation is not how she imagined until death, she sees it is like that.

A young person with light hair speaks about wanting an older brother while listening to others discuss family. 'I'M JEALOUS. I WANTED AN OLDER BROTHER.' 'I SEE... I'M THE MIDDLE CHILD OF 5 SIBLINGS, AND I HAVE BOTH AN OLDER BROTHER AND YOUNGER SISTER.' 'NO... I'M AN ONLY CHILD.' 'DO YOU HAVE ANY SIBLINGS? IT'S OKAY.' The lecturer with light hair continues: 'THE LECTURE FROM HERE ON OUT WILL BASICALLY BE COMPRISED OF GROUPS.' A spiky-haired man in a suit asks, 'NO WAY! I WAS ALWAYS PUSHED AROUND WHEN I WAS LITTLE. IS THAT SO?' Three instructional panels demonstrate aura techniques: one-handed style imagining cotton candy, circle handshake with clockwise aura flow, and praying style scooping water with eyes closed. At the bottom, Furykov declares, 'THEN, LET'S BEGIN!!' while Belerante stands beside him. Someone asks, 'HELPER.' 'HELPER?' Furykov adds, 'FURY KOV AND BELERANTE WILL CHECK THE FLOW OF EVERYONE'S AURA.'

In the 5th floor dining hall connect passageway, people react with shock: 'THAT MUCH JUST TO PASS THROUGH!!' '5000 JENNY!?' The scene shifts to the special post assigned to the Bool family. A seated man explains there is no other cafeteria but here. A tall man warns, 'IF YOU REFUSE, THEN YOU CAN GO FIND ANOTHER WAY.' Nearby figures complain about the situation. 'IF YOU CAN'T GO TO THE DINING HALL, THEN WOULD YOU LIKE TO BUY SOME CANNED OR PACKAGED FOOD AT OUR STORE?' 'THEY'VE BRIBED THE SOLDIERS IN CHARGE OF THIS AREA. THEY CAN DO AS THEY PLEASE.' 'DAMN IT... THEY'RE A BAD SORT OF PEOPLE. CAN'T SOMETHING BE DONE ABOUT THIS?' A man offers, 'IF YOU LIKE, WE CAN HELP YOU OUT BY GIVING YOU A LOAN.' Another adds, 'WE HAVE SOME CONVENIENT STACKS OF TICKETS.'

In a crowded, industrial-looking hall, a towering scarred man stands at the center and commands, "MOVE." A muscular man with a distinctive haircut faces away from him while a man in a black jacket reacts with wide-eyed shock, his shirt displaying "WHA AAAA A?". Several others stand around the confrontation. In a close-up panel below, an angry scarred man yells, "WE EVEN SILENCE CRYING KIDS!" while a bald man beside him shouts, "DO YOU KNOW WHO YA MOUTHING OFF TO, BASTARD!?" A short spiky-haired man watches silently nearby. The bottom panel shows plates of food and glasses on a table accompanied by narration boxes stating, "IN A MANNER OF SPEAKING, IT'S SIMILAR TO A FART." and "USING AN ELECTION AS A METAPHOR, THE BOOL FAMILY IS LIKE A FRINGE CANDIDATE."

A large meeting room filled with dozens of seated men shows a central discussion. A tall man at the head of the table states that each person has a personal connection to a prince and that the heads are treated as first-floor VIPs. Another speaker notes that soldiers on the lower floors are scheming to reduce the enemy's military strength until landfall. A spiky-haired man with facial scars explains that with no risk they take ninety percent as a kickback, calling themselves opportunistic thugs. A stern man with slicked-back hair asks, "WHO DO YOU GUYS BELONG TO?" The lower section displays symbolic crests labeled A, 囧, and others while text explains that sharing sake instantly makes the other two families mortal enemies and lists the third prince's affiliation with the Shu-u family, the fourth with the Ei-i family, and the seventh with the Sha-a family.

A man with spiky hair insists it is impossible for traffic to move above or below the ship. Nearby, a topknotted man questions how anyone could gain access to the second floor, concluding the request likely targets fools. The blond man suggests finding a go-between who directs between executives and soldiers, noting hot-blooded young men lack the obedience or smarts to act without oversight. The scarred man wonders which group holds the most power in financial influence and numbers, realizing it must be the Shuilu family. At a table covered in cards and documents, the group reacts in shock when someone declares the next arrival is Saturday. Voices erupt in protest: 'Shut up! You're not the one asking questions!' and 'But you better listen well from what I'm about to say!' The kneeling figure pleads for forgiveness, stating they have no interest in defying any of the families, while another shouts 'No! No! Impossible!'

The blond man leans forward with a fierce glare, pointing directly ahead as he declares the mission from now on: find guys above 190 cm and write down their room numbers. A wide horizontal panel reveals a massive bustling crowd filling a vast marketplace or deck filled with stalls, people carrying goods, and dense activity under a cloudy sky. Below, silhouette rows show many figures with one distinctive spiky-haired silhouette and another with a head ornament standing out. In the final small panels, Kurapika appears with a serious expression amid the crowd, followed by a close view of his face.

In a tense exchange, a spiky-haired figure faces another character and declares the plan unreasonable. The reply suggests settling it with a coin toss. The spiky-haired one questions why, learning that this time everyone wants to kill the target. A coin toss is only used when exactly two people are fighting. Elsewhere in the crowded ship interior, multiple voices agree: the one who finds him first will be the one to kill him. Someone states they will kill Hisoka. Another firmly rejects the idea as unreasonable. A close-up reveals intense eyes declaring "INCLUDING ME. NATURALLY." In a vast lower deck filled with passengers and stalls, a voice confirms the target is definitely on the ship. The crowd resolves that they will find him.

A woman with long wavy hair lies still in bed, eyes closed, appearing to rest or have passed. The scene shifts to a dark starry expanse where a lone figure stands before an ornate coffin or altar. Three men are shown in close-up: one with a mustache states this is nothing to be sad about. Another offers condolences from the deepest depths of his heart. A bright flame-like shape illuminates the final panels as a voice declares that the daughter has become the foundation for the great tree of Kakin, living a much more brilliantly vigorous existence than during her lifetime.

A vast, intricate maze of black lines fills the page, forming twisting corridors and walls that radiate outward from the center. Numerous white cylindrical devices, resembling surveillance cameras or sealed canisters, hang suspended in the air, each connected by thin lines to a central ornate hub with intricate patterns and radiating spokes. Large, bold black cross-shaped symbols are scattered across the composition, partially obscuring the maze. In the lower right, two small silhouetted figures stand side by side, one light-colored and one darker, gazing toward the central structure. A large speech bubble on the right side declares, "EVEN NOW, MY DAUGHTER STILL LIVES-HOI." Additional cylindrical devices and connection points are visible throughout the radial layout, emphasizing the scale of the network. At the bottom left, a rolled document or scroll displays unreadable Japanese text and symbols. The overall scene conveys a complex surveillance or containment system dominating the space.
The princes have issued orders regarding withdrawal from an activity. A hand-grasping technique is being taught to help learn Nen. Queen Oito and Prince Woble are present in a separate room.
Shimano's family has served the royal family for generations. Shimano's parents regretted not dedicating themselves until death. Shimano feels her compensation is not worth the situation.
Lecture on aura is divided into groups. Three specific hand positions are demonstrated for aura exercises. Furykov and Belerante are assigned to verify aura flow.
Passage through the area costs 5000 Jenny. The Bool family post controls the only available food source. Soldiers have been bribed to restrict access to the dining hall.
A confrontation occurs in an industrial hall. The Bool family is described using an election metaphor. Multiple men react aggressively to an order to move.
Kakin's three biggest mafias have boarded the ship. The third prince is affiliated with the Shu-u family. The fourth prince is affiliated with the Ei-i family. The seventh prince is affiliated with the Sha-a family. Sharing sake with one family makes the other two mortal enemies.
Conversation concerns ship floor access and group power dynamics. The Shuilu family is referenced as holding significant influence. A scheduled arrival is set for Saturday. The group discusses avoiding conflict with powerful families.
Mission targets individuals over 190 cm tall. Kurapika is present within the large crowd. The setting is a densely populated ship deck or market area.
A coin toss is proposed to decide who kills the target. The target is confirmed to be on the ship. Multiple characters express intent to kill Hisoka. The discussion occurs inside a crowded ship corridor and lower deck.
A woman lies motionless in bed. A figure stands before a coffin-like structure in a starry void. Three men discuss the situation in close-up profiles. Reference is made to a daughter becoming part of the great tree of Kakin.
The page shows a radial network of connected cylindrical devices. A speech bubble contains the line about a daughter still living. Two small figures are visible in the lower right. Large black crosses appear as prominent symbols on the page. The chapter number 371 is marked at the bottom.
