Luffy, Shanks, Red Hair Pirates, Shiruku ### Summary Page 16: A large, dramatic panel reveals the cost of Shanks' rescue. Shanks floats in the water, holding the crying Luffy. Shanks' left arm has been completely bitten off, blood dripping from the stump. Luffy wails uncontrollably, "UWAAAAAAAN" (SFX: AHHHHHHHHHHHHH). Despite his severe injury, Shanks smiles gently and reassures the boy, "IT'S NO BIG DEAL", "JUST ONE ARM...". In a close-up, Luffy cries into Shanks' chest. Shanks looks down at him with a soft expression, saying, "I'M GLAD YOU'RE SAFE". Later, back at the village docks, Shanks and his crew are preparing to depart (SFX: *EXCITED CROWD*). Young Luffy stands before them and asks, "IS IT TRUE YOU'RE NOT COMING BACK AFTER YOU SET OUT THIS TIME!?". Shanks replies, "YEAH", "WE STAYED HERE FOR QUITE A WHILE. IT'S ABOUT TIME WE LEAVE". Luffy demands, "THEN TAKE ME WITH YOU!". Shanks playfully pulls down his eyelid and sticks out his tongue, teasing, "NO WAY" (SFX: *BEHHHH*). Page 17: Shanks smiles down at young Luffy and says, "YOU CAN'T FIGHT", "THERE IS NO WAY YOU COULD BECOME A PIRATE!!". Luffy looks up, his face full of angry determination. He shouts, "I WILL", "EVEN THOUGH I'LL ALWAYS BE A HAMMER!!". He declares loudly, "SOME DAY, I'LL DEFINITELY BECOME A PIRATE!!", while Shanks' crew watches from the background. Shanks looks at Luffy and says, "THEN". He steps forward and gently places his own straw hat onto young Luffy's head. "I'LL LEND YOU", "THIS HAT". Luffy is stunned into silence, tears welling up in his eyes ("......!!"). A close-up shows Luffy crying quietly under the brim of the hat. Shanks turns to walk away, looking back with a smile. "IT'S MY TREASURED HAT", "COME AND RETURN IT SOME DAY", "AS A GREAT PIRATE". Luffy watches him go, his eyes wide with awe and determination. Page 18: Shiruku asks Luffy, "IS THAT 'RED HAIR SHANKS'?" Luffy, surprised, asks, "EH... HOW DID YOU KNOW THE COLOR OF HIS HAIR?" Shiruku explains, "HE HAS THREE SCARS ON HIS FACE, 'RED HAIR SHANKS'". A dark silhouette of Shanks is shown, highlighting the three scars over his left eye. Shiruku adds, "HE'S A LEGENDARY PIRATE. EVEN I KNOW OF HIM", and notes, "AND IT'S TRUE, I HAVEN'T HEARD ANY BAD RUMORS ABOUT HIM". Luffy smiles broadly, holding the brim of his straw hat, and says, "OH, SO HE'S WELL KNOWN?" He declares enthusiastically, "I WANT TO BECOME THAT KIND OF PIRATE AS WELL!!". In the next panel, Shiruku rests her chin on her hand, looking thoughtful.
