## One Piece Chapter 1.1, pages 14-16: Romance Dawn - Chapter: 1.1 - Pages: 14-16 - Characters: Monkey D. Luffy, Sea Monster, Shanks, Red Hair Pirates ### Summary Page 14: Young Luffy is out at sea, rowing a small boat (SFX BUBBLES: GIKO GIKO (ROWING)). He looks cheerful and determined, saying, "IT DOESN'T MATTER", "IF I'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO SWIM, THEN I JUST HAVE TO NEVER FALL OVERBOARD". He declares, "NO MATTER WHAT, I'M GOING TO BECOME A PIRATE AND LIVE FREELY". Suddenly, a massive sea monster bursts from the water, its huge jaws snapping Luffy's small boat in half (SFX: *CRUNCH*). Luffy is thrown into the air, crying out, "AH!". The sea monster opens its terrifying, tooth-filled mouth wide, ready to swallow Luffy as he falls toward the water (SFX: *BIG SPLASH*). Flailing in the ocean, Luffy screams in panic, "UWAAAAAH SOMEONE HELP ME!!! I CAN'T SWIM". Page 15: The sea monster's jaws snap shut with a loud *GACHIN!*. However, Shanks has suddenly appeared in the water, holding young Luffy safely away from the bite. The sea monster looks surprised (!). Luffy, trembling, says, "SHANKS...". In a close-up, Shanks glares fiercely at the sea monster and commands, "SCRAM". The beast is instantly terrified, sweating and wide-eyed. The sea monster quickly swims away in fear (SFX: *HICCUP*, *ZAPAN...*). Luffy bursts into hysterical tears, snot running from his nose, as he screams, "SHANKS!!! YOUR ARM!!!!". Page 16: A large, dramatic panel reveals the cost of Shanks' rescue. Shanks floats in the water, holding the crying Luffy. Shanks' left arm has been completely bitten off, blood dripping from the stump. Luffy wails uncontrollably, "UWAAAAAAAN" (SFX: AHHHHHHHHHHHHH). Despite his severe injury, Shanks smiles gently and reassures the boy, "IT'S NO BIG DEAL", "JUST ONE ARM...". In a close-up, Luffy cries into Shanks' chest. Shanks looks down at him with a soft expression, saying, "I'M GLAD YOU'RE SAFE". Later, back at the village docks, Shanks and his crew are preparing to depart (SFX: *EXCITED CROWD*). Young Luffy stands before them and asks, "IS IT TRUE YOU'RE NOT COMING BACK AFTER YOU SET OUT THIS TIME!?". Shanks replies, "YEAH", "WE STAYED HERE FOR QUITE A WHILE. IT'S ABOUT TIME WE LEAVE". Luffy demands, "THEN TAKE ME WITH YOU!". Shanks playfully pulls down his eyelid and sticks out his tongue, teasing, "NO WAY" (SFX: *BEHHHH*).
