Luffy, Luffy's Grandpa, Anne ### Summary Page 15: Young Luffy suddenly bursts into intense tears, bawling loudly. "I...!!! I WANTED TO BE A PIRATE!!! REALLY...!!!" he wails, "BUT I COULDN'T SWIM SO I SAID THOSE THINGS... OWW!!! OWWW." He sits on the ground, crying, "I WANNA GO OUT AND SEE LOTS OF PLACES!! I DON'T WANNA BE A HAMMER FOREVER!!!" His grandpa stops and looks back at him, saying softly, "LUFFY..." As Luffy continues to hiccup and wipe his tears, his grandpa smiles warmly and says, "I SEE. YOU WANNA BE A PIRATE!" Page 16: The heartwarming moment is instantly shattered as the grandpa delivers a brutal punch to young Luffy's head, yelling, "DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE SEA-!!!" He glares fiercely, lecturing, "THE SEA'S DIFFERENT FROM A RIVER OR A LAKE!!! IT'S A BEAST!!!!" He points a stern finger, continuing, "IF A SHIP GOES DOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SEA, EVEN I'LL DIE!!! A MAN WHIMPERING OVER SUCH A SMALL THING..." Before he can finish, young Luffy retaliates by leaping up and kicking his grandpa squarely in the face, shouting, "YOU VIOLENT OLD MAN!! How could you have done that!?" The grandpa roars, "HOW DARE YOU KICK YOUR GRANDPA!!!" while Luffy yells back, "YOU STARTED IT!!!" The flashback ends, returning to the present in the cell. Anne looks at the older Luffy and remarks, "I SEE. YOU'RE A HAMMER, HUH. FOREVER, TOO." Luffy just smiles cheerfully. Page 17: In the cell, Luffy spins his straw hat on his finger, explaining, "THIS HAT WAS ALWAYS WORN BY THAT VIOLENT GRANDPA." Anne listens quietly as he adds, "IT'S MY TREASURE." In the next panel, Luffy places the hat back on his head. Anne thoughtfully repeats, "TREASURE...!" Luffy responds, "MM-HMM. WHAT'S YOURS?" Anne smiles warmly and replies, "IF THAT'S THE CASE, MINE'S... BALLOON!" Suddenly, Luffy ignores her completely, pointing excitedly out the small porthole window and shouting, "HEY, LOOK! A WHALE!" Anne, annoyed at being ignored, yells at him, "LISTEN! You!!"
