Sanji remembers hearing from Kin'emon that these are synthetic Devil Fruits, the kind whose factory the Straw Hats destroyed. In return for the terrible curse of a Devil Fruit, the fruit grants the feral power of a beast to those who succeed. Kaido aimed to use them to strengthen his followers and build the most fearsome pirate crew in the world. But these fruits carried a catch. Page 10: The artificial power works only for about ten percent of those who eat it. If ten men eat the flesh of the fruit, only one gains its power, while the other nine become duds who receive only the adverse effects. Those who have not yet eaten any fruit and are waiting for a chance are called Waiters. The lucky ten percent who gain animal powers become Gifters.
