He remembers Akainu's words to Squardo, including the claim that he was a Marine rebel who would be killed by his own side unless he cooperated: "This plan. Whitebeard should bear the brunt of this battle!! We can't let this chance escape us. If you cooperate, you'll be saved." Whitebeard looks at Squardo and says, "But even so... I still love you..."
