36 pages

00
The page opens with the large Hunter × Hunter logo and the subtitle 'KURAPIKA'S REMINISCENCES — TOGASHI YOSHIHIRO'. On the left stands a young boy in traditional Kurta attire with a striped hat, smiling. On the right stands another boy with light hair in similar clothing, looking concerned. Between them is a central panel showing the peaceful Kurta village with round-roofed houses, villagers, and a large bird. Smaller panels depict the two boys together, one saying 'I HAVE NEVER...' and another 'SEEN THE WORLD OUTSIDE.' Action panels show a large bird attacking, with sound effects 'TOGETHER! PAIRO!' and 'ALWAYS TOGETHER! ALWAYS! ALWAYS FROM NOW ON!' A close-up shows the light-haired boy shouting 'ISN'T THAT WHAT D HUNTER TAUGHT US!? NOT TO LOSE TO CHALLENGES LIKE THAT! YOU CANNOT LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST!' The bottom features a detailed summary box: 'EYES THAT TURN CRIMSON WITH EMOTION... WITHIN THE FOREST DWELLS A CLAN CUT OFF FROM THE OUTSIDE WORLD, FEARFUL OF HARM BECAUSE OF THIS UNIQUE CHARACTERISTIC. THEY ARE THE KURTA CLAN. AMONG THEM IS A YOUNG MAN NAMED KURAPIKA, WHO HAS YEARNED FOR THE OUTSIDE WORLD BECAUSE OF A BOOK HE READ. THE RULE THAT 'YOU CANNOT LEAVE THE FOREST UNTIL YOU BECOME AN ADULT' HAS ALWAYS HELD HIM BACK. BUT THROUGH PERSEVERANCE, HE HAS FINALLY RECEIVED PERMISSION TO TAKE THE EXIT QUALIFICATION EXAM. THE TEST IS A TEST OF SELF-CONTROL. 'YOU MUST RETURN WITHIN 24 HOURS WITHOUT LETTING YOUR EYES TURN SCARLET'...KURAPIKA FACES THE FINAL TEST WITH HIS FRIEND PAIRO. WHAT WILL HE SEE IN THIS UNKNOWN WORLD...?'

A sprawling city market bustles with tents, crowds, and livestock under a bright sky. Large text declares the final test: whether the two of them will safely return from the city. Young Kurapika, a blond boy with a bag, beams with excitement and shouts, "AWESOME! SO MANY PEOPLE! SO MANY DIFFERENT THINGS!" while gripping Pairo's hand. Pairo, wearing a headband and vest, smiles beside him. A short-haired girl warns, "KURAPIKA, YOU CAN'T GET TOO EXCITED." Young Kurapika replies, "AH... THAT'S RIGHT." The girl adds, "CALM DOWN, CALM DOWN." From below, a voice calls, "ALRIGHT! LET'S HURRY UP AND GO SHOPPING! THERE ARE... STILL 17 AND A HALF HOURS LEFT, HUH." Two small figures walk away in the distance while a seated man watches near a brick wall and a white dog-like creature.

Young Kurapika and Pairo stand before a massive multi-story department store. Young Kurapika yells, "IT'S HUGE!" and "THERE IT IS!" A voice explains, "YOU CAN BUY ANYTHING YOU NEED THERE! THERE'S A PLACE CALLED A 'DEPARTMENT STORE' IN TOWN." Pairo holds up a jar of coins and says, "IS THAT YOUR MONEY, PAIRO!? AWESOME!" while shaking it. Pairo smiles and replies, "I'M ALWAYS HELPING PEOPLE OUT, SO I'VE MANAGED TO SAVE UP A LOT OF TRAVEL MONEY, LITTLE BY LITTLE." Inside the store, Young Kurapika pushes a shopping cart as Pairo walks beside him. A store clerk asks if they need help. Pairo suggests splitting up to shop faster. Young Kurapika agrees enthusiastically, saying, "LET'S HURRY UP AND FINISH SO WE CAN BUY STUFF FOR YOU, PAIRO!" as they enter the bright interior.

In a bustling store aisle, young Kurapika stands alone with a worried expression, wondering if standing out as a child with too much stuff might make his eyes turn scarlet. Nearby, Pairo pushes a shopping cart while a store clerk in an apron mentions needing toilet paper. Suddenly, a loud crash erupts as a spiky-haired man with a fur collar collides with Pairo, sending items flying and yelling 'WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING, BRAT!' The impact dirties the man's clothes, prompting him to complain 'NOW YOU'VE GOTTEN MY CLOTHES DIRTY...' while another tall spiky-haired man watches from the side. Young Kurapika reacts with shock, his hair flying from the force of the encounter.

The spiky-haired man continues to berate the group, demanding what they will do about the ice cream now splattered on his clothes. Young Kurapika rushes forward, shouting 'PAIRO!' in alarm. Pairo, on the ground, insists he is fine and just tripped. Concerned onlookers ask if anyone is hurt. The spiky-haired man grows furious, yelling 'I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!' and accusing Pairo of lying. An older man with a stern expression warns that Pairo's life might depend on what he says next. The spiky-haired man demands payment for cleaning while refusing any apologies, and another figure admits he cannot see very well.

In a clothing shop, two rough-looking men confront young Kurapika and Pairo. One man leans in close and asks, "HOW MUCH... SHOULD WE GIVE YOU?" The other orders, "TELL US HOW MUCH YOU HAVE, FIRST," while warning, "WATCH HOW YOU TALK, BRAT." Young Kurapika hesitates with an uncertain "UM..." The men stand over the boys, one noting, "THE STAINS WON'T COME OUT THAT EASILY..." and the other adding, "IT'S SPECIAL-ORDER CLOTHING, YOU KNOW?" Young Kurapika holds up a glass jar of coins and explains, "THIS IS ALL THE MONEY THAT WE HAVE. WE'RE BUYING STUFF FOR OTHER PEOPLE, SO..." The men react with shock and mockery. One exclaims, "OI, OI, LOOK AT THIS!" while another snorts, "PFF..." Pairo tries to calm the situation, saying, "IT'S FINE!" but young Kurapika grabs him and shouts, "PAIRO, YOU CAN'T!"

The three men burst into mocking laughter at the sight of the coins. One yells, "IT'S BARELY EVEN 1 JENNY ALL TOGETHER!" An older man with a long nose tries to intervene, saying, "BOYS, BOYS," but the spiky-haired man snatches the jar and pours the coins onto the floor, declaring, "ISN'T EVEN WORTH A LOAD OF SHIT" and "THIS SMALL CHANGE..." Young Kurapika and Pairo watch in horror as the coins scatter. From below, young Kurapika cries out, "YOU CAN'T!" while Pairo shouts, "KURA-PIKA!" The blond girl looks up with a worried expression and says, "YOU GUYS..."

A spiky-haired man sweats heavily, bowing deeply with a strained expression as he repeatedly apologizes. "I'M SORRY!" "PLEASE, FORGIVE ME." "I'M SORRY!" he exclaims. Nearby, young Gon with his bowl-cut hair and vest gestures reassuringly with one hand raised, saying "IT'S FINE! IT'S BECAUSE I WAS CARELESS!" while another voice insists "WE HAVE TO APOLOGIZE SOMEHOW!" and "I'M SORRY!" In a wider view, the spiky-haired man and several other rough-looking adults with wild hair and rugged clothing all bow low together on a sloped street, pleading "PLEASE FORGIVE US!" The man glares and growls "THEY'RE JUST KIDS!" while his companion adds "HEY... LEAVE THEM ALONE." SFX like "さわ ざわ" and motion lines emphasize the tense, apologetic atmosphere amid background onlookers.

Gon and Killua kneel on a tiled floor, picking up scattered small objects and boxes. A woman with short hair watches with concern, while an older man with glasses smiles and speaks. In the background, the group of spiky-haired adults stands with their backs turned as a large speech bubble commands "SCRAM." Killua and Gon exchange words with the older man and woman; the woman says "THANK YOU." Gon replies "AH..." More dialogue follows with "THANK YOU!" "IT'S FINE!" "WE SHOULD HAVE STOPPED THEM SOONER." "I'M SORRY..." "YEAH." and "I'M REALLY SORRY." A man in overalls comments "THOSE PUNKS ARE THE DREGS OF THIS TOWN... THEY'RE HOPELESS." while a hooded figure asks "ARE YOU GUYS TRAVELING?" A sign with a moon symbol is visible on the left.

Young Kurapika and Pairo walk through the town after finishing their tasks early, grateful for the help they received. "No matter what happens, there will be people that will help! It was just like in D Hunter, Pairo!" Pairo says cheerfully, raising a finger. "We were able to finish early thanks to everyone helping us!" They pass large ostrich-like creatures carrying heavy loads. One creature suggests returning to the village, but Pairo points ahead, saying there's still time to look around town more. Young Kurapika agrees with a simple "Yeah." In a close-up, young Kurapika smiles and suggests going back early because the weather might change suddenly. Pairo turns with a concerned expression, calling his name. The group continues down the dirt road lined with buildings, the creatures following behind. At the bottom of the page, both children suddenly look worried, their eyes wide with surprise at something ahead.

Three figures block the road ahead: a scarred woman, a tall man with spiky hair and a chain necklace, and a furry monkey-like person. The scarred woman grins menacingly and demands they stop, declaring that otherwise they cannot pass this way and must pay the toll. Young Kurapika and Pairo freeze in alarm. The tall man laughs loudly, saying "Boy, boy, boy" and suggesting they go through the field instead. The monkey-like figure also speaks. Pairo looks down with a grim expression while young Kurapika stares ahead tensely. The confrontation leaves the children cornered on the empty street.

A stern man with glasses leans in close and snaps at the small light-haired boy, 'That's your own ignorance, no?' The boy looks up wide-eyed as the man continues, 'I've never heard of a law like that.' The boy replies firmly, 'We don't have any more money.' A massive close-up shows the glasses-wearing man baring his teeth and shouting, 'You country hicks! I'm saying you need money to leave this town...' The spiky-haired man with a chain necklace smirks and suggests, 'Then, leave your belongings and birds here.' At a wooden doorway, the spiky-haired man points and demands, 'Hand that over and we'll let you pass.' Another thug with wild hair adds, 'A cell phone? You've got something good there.' Gon stands in the foreground, holding up the glowing cell phone with a determined expression.

Gon holds the cell phone to his ear and says, 'I'll ask if you really need to pay a toll to leave here.' The spiky-haired man reacts with shock, exclaiming he is calling the police. A large close-up shows an angry eye and gritted teeth. In a wide shot of a dusty street with distant buildings, the group walks away while background figures shout, 'What are you guys doing?!' and 'Hey...over there!!' The spiky-haired thug looks back in panic, saying 'Ugh...' and later 'Shit... Hurry up and scram!' The three thugs break into a run, leaving Gon, Killua, and the other child walking forward.

A violent impact sends dust and debris flying as a figure is hurled backward. Young Kurapika stands protectively in front of Pairo, who has fallen to his knees. Motion lines and impact effects fill the panel. In the next moment, Pairo pushes himself up from the ground, insisting he is unhurt. Young Kurapika calls out Pairo's name in alarm. A tall man with spiky hair looms over them, shouting angrily. Nearby villagers watch the confrontation. Young Kurapika turns with a bright smile and urges Pairo to leave with him. The spiky-haired man continues to yell insults, calling young Kurapika a bastard while Pairo explains he simply tripped on his own.

The spiky-haired man walks beside young Kurapika, who carries a bag. The man speaks mockingly about babysitting the cripple and comments that it must be tough. A close-up reveals the man's sweating, angry face twisted in contempt as he asks if young Kurapika is happy living like that.

A bowl-cut boy in a black vest walks away with his back to the viewer. The spiky-haired man in a torn coat suddenly grabs a light-haired child by the collar and hoists him upward, the child's body twisting in the air. A small speech bubble near the man's head contains only "!!". The lower panel shows a tight close-up of the spiky-haired man's face, eyes squeezed shut and mouth clenched, motion lines streaking across the frame as if from a heavy impact or sudden stop.

A violent clash erupts. The spiky-haired man is struck hard, his body twisting as a massive impact SFX "バン" crosses the panel. Another figure with a fur collar lunges forward with a shocked "!!". Below, the same spiky-haired man crouches in pain, clutching his midsection, while the bowl-cut boy and a long-haired girl react with surprise. A question mark floats near the girl. In the bottom panel the long-haired girl points accusingly and shouts "YOU..." as the spiky-haired man glares back with an "8" expression mark.

In a violent clash, two figures are struck with tremendous force amid explosive motion lines and impact bursts. Below, a spiky-haired boy hunches over clutching his head in agony while a long-haired figure kneels nearby, hands pressed to their face. A small child in a dark tunic stands nearby and commands them to rise. The spiky-haired boy and the long-haired figure both cry out in pain. The child repeats the order with growing intensity. In a dramatic close-up, the child's face fills the frame, eyes wide and mouth open in a fierce shout as they demand the others stand up.

The spiky-haired boy is slammed backward by a powerful strike, his body twisting under heavy impact lines as he shouts in pain. Nearby, the same boy appears hunched and suffering while another figure reacts with distress. In a wider view, the spiky-haired boy lies bandaged on the ground alongside the long-haired figure, both injured. Two small figures stand at a distance. The short-haired child leans forward with a cold expression and declares that apologies are unnecessary, ordering the others to die.

In a rocky, barren landscape, several bandits stand over two small figures. Young Kurapika and Pairo kneel on the ground while the bandits loom above them. One bandit shouts, "I CAN'T FORGIVE THESE GUYS!" Another yells, "THAT'S ENOUGH! STOP IT, KURAPIKA!" and "GET OUT OF MY WAY, PAIRO!" A bandit grabs Pairo by the shoulder and warns, "YOU CAN'T, KURAPIKA!" Pairo pleads desperately, "LET US GO! I'M BEGGING YOU!" One bandit defends their actions, saying, "WE WERE JUST DOING WHAT WE WERE ASKED TO DO!" A close-up shows a sweating, panicked bandit with a large nose and spiky hair. Young Kurapika's eyes widen in shock as he asks, "WHAT DO YOU MEAN?" The bandits continue explaining that several days ago a weird old man with a huge beard, a hairstyle like a horn, and a scar on his forehead told them that if they pissed Kurapika and Pairo off, he'd give them money.

Young Kurapika's face twists in anger and disbelief as he demands, "DID THE OLD MAN TELL YOU ABOUT THAT TOO!!" about Pairo's body. Flashbacks show Pairo's bandaged and injured form. The bandits insist, "WE WERE JUST DOING WHAT HE TOLD US TO!" and "YEAH! YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT!" Young Kurapika and Pairo realize the timeline does not match: the injuries to Pairo happened only half a day ago, not several days ago. Pairo states, "IT'S A LIE." The bandits admit they were told to piss the kids off so an adult would come with them. One bandit apologizes, saying, "I'M SORRY! HE REALLY SAID THAT YOU'D BE COMING WITH AN ADULT..." Young Kurapika calls the bandit a bastard while Pairo looks distressed.

In a dusty hillside town, large narration boxes recount how the plan changed, forcing a stop midway so only half the money would be received. An old man with a scarred face and spiky hair sweats heavily while holding a small mobile phone, reacting with a sharp "!?" as he listens. Nearby, young Kurapika and a blonde Kurta child watch with tense expressions. Young Kurapika then speaks firmly, instructing the old man to tell the caller that no matter how they tried to rile them up, they did not get mad, and to call that old man. The spiky-haired man sits on the ground looking distressed, while the two children stand before him. He responds that he gets it and will call right away, his voice trailing off as the scene shifts to a wide view of the hills.

The spiky-haired elder bows deeply on the ground, repeatedly apologizing and saying he got carried away, while holding the phone. He tells the caller he does not want the money anymore and hangs up with a casual "See ya." Young Kurapika and the blonde child stand with their backs to the viewer as the elder pleads for forgiveness. The blonde child remains silent with a somber expression. Young Kurapika turns and says "Let's go, Kurapika." Close-up panels show the blonde child's face shifting from quiet sadness to sudden shock, eyes widening with motion lines and a sweat drop appearing as an impact effect strikes near their head.

In a dusty village square, a crowd of robed villagers gathers around two young boys. An elderly woman with glasses and a cross necklace stands protectively near a girl with long pigtails, gripping her arm tightly. One boy turns and calls out "GRANNY..." as the old woman raises her hand and shouts, "GET AWAY FROM THOSE BOYS." Her expression twists in terror as she leans forward, eyes wide behind thick lenses, and screams "RED EYED MONSTER!!!" The surrounding villagers react with fear and anger. A woman points and yells "AGENTS OF THE DEVIL!" while another demands "GET OUT OF THIS TOWN!" A small child cries "STOP IT!" as the mob closes in on the scene.

The pigtail girl pleads with the elderly woman, warning that angering the crowd will get them all killed. The elderly woman refuses to back down. Nearby, two boys walk side by side between two large, bird-like creatures with saddles and packs. The creatures tower over the boys as they move through a town street lined with buildings and signs. In a separate scene, the same bird creatures are shown as dark silhouettes resting inside a lush forest clearing surrounded by trees and foliage.

Under a starry night sky, a voice explains that the Kurta clan's scarlet eyes are the reason everyone fears them. Especially when the eyes turn scarlet from anger, an amazing strength emerges. Another voice adds that there is no good reason to simply hide the fact that their eyes have changed color. In a forest clearing, young Kurapika and Pairo stand before a tall figure wearing a bird-like mask. Pairo laughs and boasts that he took care of them all, while Kurapika says he was awesome back there. The masked figure notes that it is true sunglasses and contacts would slip right off if that happened. Kurapika replies that he sees... that's right. Later panels show the two boys walking side by side. Kurapika tells Pairo he passed the test and should go see the outside world. Pairo answers that maybe they really shouldn't go out into the outside world. Three small bird-like creatures hop along the forest path behind them.

Pairo reacts with surprise, saying there is no way he can pass and that his eyes already turned scarlet. Kurapika tells him the phone call was pointless too and suggests using the experience to reflect. Pairo asks what Kurapika is talking about. In a close-up, Pairo's eyes widen as he realizes the color went back to normal. Kurapika holds up a round mirror and says look. Pairo asks why it did not work and notes that once eyes turn scarlet they won't go back. Kurapika smiles and reveals he switched it. Pairo is shocked. At night under stars, Kurapika explains he heard the old man and three adults talking after it was decided they would go outside. They were the ones being unfair to begin with. Pairo says don't get him wrong, it is not that he did not believe in Kurapika. In the final panels, Kurapika and Pairo kneel before a small bottle; Kurapika admits what they put in their eyes was actually his own eye medicine.

A massive black silhouette blots out the stars as two voices cheer. "WE PASSED!" someone shouts. "THEN..." another voice trails off. Below, a grand domed structure rises from the forest clearing, surrounded by scattered groups of villagers. In the foreground, young Kurapika and Pairo stand side by side, fists raised in triumph. "ALL RIGHT !!" they both exclaim, faces bright with excitement. The scene cuts to a dramatic close-up of the village elder, his stern face framed by radiating speed lines. "YOU ARE GRANTED UNRESTRICTED PERMISSION TO GO OUTSIDE!" he declares. "KURAPIKA," he adds, addressing the boy directly.

Young Kurapika stares in shock, eyes wide. "ELDER... NO MATTER THE REASON, ALL OF A SUDDEN, THAT'S TOO MUCH..." he protests, sweat drops visible. A small panel shows the elder handing a document to Pairo in the forest. Another panel reveals the elder standing before a group of villagers inside the domed building. Young Kurapika’s surprised face appears again, followed by a close-up of an envelope being held. The elder’s intense face fills the next panel. "SEARCH TO YOUR HEART'S CONTENT," he commands. In the final wide panel, Pairo stands with his back to the viewer holding the paper while young Kurapika kneels on the floor. The elder continues, "TO BE HONEST... I DON'T REALLY WANT TO LET YOU GO INTO THE OUTSIDE WORLD! BUT DON'T BE MISTAKEN."

On the day of departure, a large feathered creature carries a young traveler away from the village. Several villagers wave goodbye while one calls out, "YEAH." Another warns, "REMEMBER, HASTE MAKES WASTE." A third adds, "BE CAREFUL!" The rider replies, "I KNOW." In a closer view, Pairo and young Kurapika stand together as Pairo shouts, "PAIRO!" and another voice calls, "KURA-PIKA." The creature strides through the forest with the rider aboard. Villagers line the path and one says, "YEAH." Another calls, "TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF." In a close-up, young Kurapika smiles and declares, "AND THEN NEXT TIME THE 2 OF US WILL TRAVEL TOGETHER!" Pairo answers with determination, "PAIRO! I'LL DEFINITELY FIND A DOCTOR THAT WILL CURE YOU!" Young Kurapika promises, "IT'S A PROMISE." Pairo responds, "YEAH! I'LL DEFINITELY PASS!" Pairo continues, "UNTIL THEN, YOU NEED TO PASS THE EXIT QUALIFICATION EXAM TOO!"

Young Kurapika shouts with emphasis, "THE REASON WE WANTED TO GO OUTSIDE THE WORLD... WAS BECAUSE WE READ D HUNTER, RIGHT?" Pairo looks surprised and replies, "KURA-PIKA." In a smaller panel Pairo says, "REALLY, I'M HAPPY, BUT..." Young Kurapika continues, "BECAUSE WE WANTED TO ENJOY THE OUTSIDE WORLD, RIGHT?" and adds, "IT'S BECAUSE WE WANTED TO HAVE ADVENTURES LIKE THAT..." Young Kurapika smiles and agrees, "YEAH! THAT'S RIGHT!" Pairo answers softly, "...YEAH." Pairo then says, "YOU PROMISE ME AS WELL." In close-up, Pairo asks, "THEN, KURAPIKA..." and continues, "I'LL HAVE JUST ONE QUESTION." Pairo raises a finger and states, "WHEN YOU RETURN, KURAPIKA."

Young Kurapika smiles warmly as he looks at the girl and asks, "WAS IT FUN?" He adds, "I'LL ASK THAT, SO..." The girl with light hair stares back seriously and replies, "YOU CAN ANSWER 'YES' FROM THE BOTTOM OF YOUR HEART." She continues, "YOU HAVE TO HAVE A JOURNEY SUCH THAT..."

A young boy in dark traditional clothing stands alone against a brilliant white light, one hand raised high as if waving farewell. The scene shifts to a close-up of a spiky-haired character with wide eyes and an open mouth, reacting in visible shock. In a lush forest clearing filled with swirling trees and large mushrooms, several Kurta clan members gather. A text box states: "THE NEWS AT THE TIME WAS REPORTED LIKE THIS." Another reads: "THE NEWS OF THE KURATA CLAN'S MASSACRE WAS REPORTED THROUGHOUT THE WORLD 6 WEEKS LATER." Young Kurapika stands in the foreground with a serious expression, while other villagers including adults and a girl look on somberly.

35
Black panels detail the massacre: family members were forced to sit facing each other, stabbed while still alive, then beheaded. A female traveler who got lost discovered all 128 villagers killed. It is hypothesized the culprits first attacked outside clansmen to agitate pureblood Kurata whose eyes turned red from grief, then beheaded them one by one. Pureblood members had eyes gouged out; those who married in kept their eyes but showed more injury. Many merciless wounds marked the children's bodies, done to force parents' eyes redder. The scarlet eyes are the most brilliant shade of red and command a high price on the black market. A message believed from the culprits was found near the bodies. Large text declares: "VENGEANCE BEGINS!" A quote reads: "WE REJECT NO ONE. SO TAKE NOTHING FROM US!"
