Roger and his crew learned about the future birth and maturation of Poseidon and realized that they had reached the end of their journey too early. This establishes that discovering the truth of the world was not enough to complete whatever Joy Boy’s generation had begun. At least one crucial part of the future had to exist before the story could progress. This supports the theory that “too early” may refer not simply to chronology, but to the necessary pieces of the world’s future not yet being in place.
