40 KINDS OF SPELLS

A glowing card labeled "1039 ACCOMPANY F-130" fills the left panel, its text describing a spell that lets all players within 20m fly to a target city including the caster. To the right, Gon stands holding a box, declaring "WE'LL TAKE YOU TO AJITO NOW." and asking "EVERYBODY HERE?" In the next panel Killua appears in profile, shouting "KOZUFUTORO!" while activating the card with "ACCOMPANY ON!" The lower half erupts into violent motion as a thatched-roof building is struck, wooden beams and debris flying outward amid heavy speed lines and impact effects. A narrow strip of dense foliage runs along the very bottom.

In a sunlit forest clearing, dozens of robed figures sit or stand among tall trees. A swordsman wearing a wide-brimmed hat and dark cloak stands in the foreground, addressing the group. "Well, in fact we still have a good walk awaiting us before getting there," he says. A small round-faced character adds, "New comrades, welcome to Ajito." The swordsman continues, "I see. Instead of taking us to Ajito directly, he takes us there by an indirect path. Thus, he avoids revealing the location of the base." He points to himself and declares, "You'll need to know my name when returning to Ajito using a spell. My name is Kozufutoro. Remember it." A panel labeled "Care-ful people" shows a close-up of a wary face. In the next scene Kozufutoro crouches and explains, "Which means that you'll go to Ajito, get briefed and immediately after, fly out again to other places." He concludes, "All ten of you are going to be employed at collecting spell cards."

Killua appears in close-up with spiky hair, explaining the rules. "One pack of three cards costs 10000 jennies," he says. "It's the only place where spell cards can be acquired." He adds, "The destination will be the magic city of Masadora." In another panel he notes, "And, of course, higher-ranked cards are harder to get. You won't know what cards you bought til you open a pack." A group of listeners stands nearby; one man replies, "Exactly." The scene shifts to a dense forest with many figures gathered among the trees. Narration states, "Gathering all 40 types of spell cards lets you exchange them for the SS ranked imposed slot card 'Archangel's Breath.'" Another caption reads, "It's so rare that there isn't a single player who owns it."

In a forest clearing, Gon stands with his hands on his hips as speech bubbles explain the mechanics of the "List" spell card. The panel shows that the card reveals the exact number of copies in existence and how many players hold any given spell. Gon listens intently while an unseen speaker notes there have probably never been any new copies of the "Archangel's Breath" since the game began. Another panel depicts two silhouetted figures inside a building exchanging cards, illustrating how even collectors who start with forty spells quickly use them up because they are so useful. Gon then appears in close-up beside a grid displaying the complete collection of forty spells, his expression serious as he states they managed to put the set together despite the difficulty.

The scene shifts to a dense forest at night. Gon points forward and declares they must obtain one more copy of a certain card before exchanging the completed set. A close-up shows his serious face under moonlight as he states their highest priority is to get the "Prison" card, more important than all other defensive spells. In a smaller panel a dark-haired man and a bald man react with surprise, one saying "Oh." The view widens dramatically to a massive hole torn in the forest floor surrounded by shattered rocks and dense foliage. The final wide panel shows a group of people standing at the edge of the crater, looking down into the darkness.

Killua and Gon stand with their backs to the viewer as a voice explains the rules of the game. 'You'll all practice becoming able to visually estimate this distance within a precision of under 5cm. Only if you can do that will you be able to participate in fighting.' The speaker continues, 'This 20m distance thus becomes an important limiting factor. There are short and long range spells. Short range means it's effective within a 20m radius of the caster. Long range spells have effect anywhere on this island. Let's immediately move on to the explanations of spells.' Diagrams show stick figures spaced at varying distances. 'It is an encounter even if you fail to notice each other, as long as the opponent enters this 20m radius area around you. This 20m radius is also used to determine player encounters. For instance, when you walk by another player in town.' A close-up shows Genthru holding up two fingers. 'The enemy attack is delayed for a maximum of 15 seconds. During that time you have some leeway to ponder whether to use a spell or not. When facing an attack... if you have taken out your binder and possess the appropriate defensive spell, at that moment it becomes possible to use attack spells on each other.' A woman with a book appears next. 'When you have grasped these concepts, please look over this paper. In short, as long as you stay alert, you cannot be taken by surprise by a spell card. Please memorize it within one hour's time. One could say that this contains information that will decide the success or failure of our plan.' Genthru and another man stare at the paper as someone exclaims 'This... !!'

A detailed table displays spells numbered 1031 through 1040 from the game. 1031 ANALYSIS shows explanation on card of the chosen number. 1032 LOTTERY transforms into a random item card. 1033 ADHESION continuously informs on imposed slots contents of target player. 1034 PURIFY dispels effect of transformation spell and returns card to original form. 1035 PRISON permanently protects cards inserted in slots on target page from stealing and destruction spells. 1036 GOD EYE grants the caster permanent effects of Analysis and List spells on all cards from No.001 to No.099. 1037 RECYCLE allows an item converted from a card to be changed into card form once more. 1038 LIST informs on number of people in possession of target card as well as the total number of copies. 1039 ACCOMPANY flies all players within a radius of 20m around the caster to the location of target city or target player. 1040 CONTACT allows communication through the binders with target player for a maximum duration of three minutes.

The group discusses defensive strategies using the newly revealed spells. One character notes that an attack well carried out is still worthwhile if it can result in winning very valuable spells, while another observes that setting up defense spells is more numerous and easier than acquiring attack spells. They decide to use PRISON to protect the nine imposed slots on one binder page from spells. The most needed card right now is identified as 1035 PRISON. A plan is made to collect the paper again in one hour. Another character questions what is happening when a panel is shown. Several characters react with surprise and agreement, stating they are done and offering to list the total of the card limit numbers on the defensive spells they want to monopolize.

A stern man with short white hair and a prominent facial scar glares forward with narrowed eyes and a tense expression. Nearby, a man with curly dark hair speaks approvingly. "GOOD. YOU PASS." Another voice mutters "BLAH BLAH..." The scarred man is then questioned about spell cards: "THEN TELL ME THE NAMES OF ALL THE SPELL CARDS THAT CAN BE DESTROYED WITH 'COMPROMISE.' AND THEN WHICH SPELLS GIVE YOU A CHANCE TO, CONVERSELY, ACQUIRE THESE SAME CARDS?" He responds, "IS THAT SO? FOR ME, YOU CAN ASK AN EVEN MORE DIFFICULT QUESTION." A harsh voice immediately declares, "WRONG ANSWER!" The scarred man and the curly-haired man react with shock as "blah blah" sound effects appear. Elsewhere, a young man with short dark hair scoffs, "PFFT." In the background, figures react as someone says "learn it again" and "shit." A sudden outburst follows with "DAMN!" and "GAHH" as a panel shows a dramatic reaction. A speech bubble states, ""HOLY WATER" CANNOT BE DESTROYED WITH A SPELL." The bottom of the page shows abstract cloud-like shapes and scattered Japanese sound effects.

In a large hall, Killua stands on the left with spiky white hair, wearing a white and black shirt and shorts, while Gon faces right in similar attire. Both boys are in fighting stances with motion lines around them. A large screen in the background displays blurry text and silhouettes of people. A mustached man lies on the ground with a shocked expression, mouth open wide. Killua and Gon leap forward as the mustached man is struck. Large stylized text reads "JAN KEN" and "STARTING WITH THE FIST!" At the bottom, two pairs of hands are shown: one clenched fist and one open hand with fingers extended. A bold "PON!" sound effect erupts between them.

Killua stands triumphant with a wide grin and clenched fist as an excited crowd erupts around him. An older man in a suit shouts, "MR. KILLUA, CONGRATULATIONS!" while another spectator yells, "WE HAVE A WINNER!" and notes, "SO HE USED THE LEFT." Killua pumps his fist and declares, "YES!" In the next panel Killua runs forward, clenching his fist with a "clench" SFX as he explains, "I CALL IT 'WINNING BY SWITCHING.'" Gon, facing him, replies, "MY SECRET ANTI-GON WEAPON:" and adds, "HECK, I NEVER THOUGHT THAT IN THE FINALS YOU'D SUDDENLY BEGIN USING BOTH HANDS." Killua rubs his nose with a satisfied "ふふっ" while a puff of smoke appears beside him. A man in uniform presents a large card and announces, "THE GRAND PRIZE: 'SWORD OF TRUTH.'" and offers, "CONGRATULATIONS!" Gon excitedly points and says, "LOOK, GON!" as the card labeled "83 SWORD OF TRUTH B-82" is shown in close-up, revealing a gleaming sword with the description: "Cuts right through all false things. Can also be used to perform judgement. Touch the accused with the sword, and if he is true, the sword will disintegrate instead of cutting him. It will then regenerate in one day's time, if put into the sheath." An imposed slot card marked "CARD #83" appears. In the final panel Killua raises both arms in excitement, shouting, "...IN OUR HANDS!" while Gon gestures and answers, "OKAY. ONE CARD ALREADY..."
