Chapter 90

Gon and Killua confirm their plan with short replies. Gon says OK while Killua asks if everything is alright. The team discusses contingency signals: one ring means stop, two rings is a classical call. If the targets separate, Leorio is to follow the girl, contact Zepairu, and handle the auction. The scene shifts to a wide view of a bustling outdoor plaza filled with crowds near modern buildings and walkways. From behind, Gon, Killua, and Leorio are visible among the many pedestrians as they prepare to move.

Gon and Killua stand face to face in close conversation. Gon asks, "For a day or so..." Killua replies, "Yes." Gon presses, "Without being spotted?" Killua answers, "Seriously?" Gon continues, "During the Hunter Test, I tailed Hisoka..." Killua reacts with surprise, "Ehh... You've never done any tailing, have you?" Suddenly Killua delivers a sharp strike; a loud "PAF" and "AIE!" sound effect erupts as Gon is hit on the head, his hair flying. A suited man with glasses watches from behind and exclaims, "Ooh!!! Bravo!" Gon, rubbing his head with a question mark floating above, demands, "Why'd you hit me?" Killua turns away, saying, "I don't know... no reason." The two boys immediately sprint off together, Killua shouting "LET'S GO!" as motion lines streak behind their feet. In the next panel Killua explains, "We just have to avoid entering their field of vision." The final wide panel shows a city skyline at the bottom left while on the right Killua rides a skateboard through a tiled hallway, Gon running beside him and the man with glasses following behind. Killua says, "Okay, in that case, I don't have anything else to add."

Three disheveled men with bruised faces stand in a dim interior, staring forward with grim expressions. Below, Gon peeks over a concrete ledge while Killua walks ahead on a street with two women. The large bottom panel reveals a wide overhead view of a bustling town square centered on a domed building. Numerous pedestrians move in various directions across the open plaza. Killua crouches in the foreground, hand to his head, and reports, "Our targets have left the square, and went down a little street." He adds with a spark effect, "OK. I'm following." Scattered townspeople fill the square, some sitting, some walking, creating a lively daytime scene.

Gon and Killua maintain Zetsu while observing two figures from a high vantage point. Gon warns that the targets remain on guard, so they cannot afford to slack. Killua agrees it is almost impossible for the pair to sense them yet insists they stay alert. In a close-up, Killua sweats and stresses that even the smallest movements must be watched nervously because the two targets are not easy opponents. From another angle Killua notes that if the targets try to hide their strength, a behavioral change will appear instantly. He adds that their observation and experience may not be enough to catch such a fleeting sign, which will last only a fraction of a second. Below, the two targets walk down a narrow alley, unaware. Killua’s face fills the final panel as he reminds himself he must not relax his attention for even that fraction of a second, having trained his life on the line since age three.

A long-haired man states that the tail is no mere guy but someone using a perfect Zetsu. Gon, watching from cover, confirms they have mastered it finely. In the alley the long-haired man and his companion continue walking while the short-haired woman glances back. Gon and Killua suddenly appear in a crowded market street; Gon leaps forward with an outstretched arm while Killua sits on the ground, one hand extended toward the fallen long-haired man and the short-haired woman lying nearby. Market stalls and bystanders fill the background as Gon’s dynamic pose suggests he has just acted.

A close-up shows a shoe stepping carefully through foliage. "It's possible that they didn't notice us, and are heading back to their headquarters. In that case, the tailing is successful..." Two distant figures walk away across open ground toward a ruined structure. "They probably feel our presence. In that case, is it a trick...? No... I'm certain they don't know our position!" Killua's face appears among leaves, sweat visible. "Damn... they're going deep into a deserted area." A close-up reveals intense eyes and a tense expression. "Which is it?" A voice wonders. "A trap? Their HQ?" Sweat drips as the character decides. "We continue!! I don't see any change in behavior! If it's the first one, we have to leave. If it's the second, we should tail them a bit more." The scene cuts to a wide view of crumbling stone buildings as a massive sound effect erupts across the page: ヒュオオオオオ and FUUUUUUU.

The long-haired man speaks: "I don't think it's the chain guy..." The boy replies, "They're not responding to our invitation..." The long-haired man continues, "He belongs to the Nostrade clan, doesn't he? Yet he faced Uvo alone." The boy asks, "What's that based on?" The long-haired man notes, "While the chain guy seems to act alone, there's several. Why?" A small figure of the boy appears in a panel. The long-haired man reasons, "Why would a guy employed by the mafia fight alone? But there's nothing. To me, it means that the chain guy confronted Uvo and didn't tell the mafia. If the mafia was meddled in it, they probably would have used the info on Uvo to threaten us. They would have distributed pictures of Uvo's decapitated head, or other things like that... How do I know? 'Cause the mafia didn't make one move."

On a stone-paved walkway, the long-haired man with a goatee stands holding his staff while a small figure kneels nearby. He declares, "SO HE'S NOT THE ONE TAILING US." Another voice adds, "THE CHAIN GUY ACTS ALONE." The long-haired man continues, "THERE'S A LOT OF 'WHAT IF'S INVOLVED, AREN'T THERE? PROBABLY PERSONAL REASONS." A sharp reply comes: "SHUT UP!" He presses on, "I THINK THERE ARE TOO MANY DOUBTS IN YOUR THEORY." In close-up, his stern face states, "A GUY WHO WOULD TEAM UP WITH OTHER PEOPLE APART FROM THE MAFIA TO OBTAIN REVENGE ISN'T LOGICAL." The spiky-haired boy with light hair responds thoughtfully, "I THINK THE CHAIN GUY AND THE ONES THAT FOLLOW US ARE RELATED." The long-haired man replies, "HUH... HOW SO? I'M LISTENING!" The scene shifts to ruined stone structures and an open plaza with a raised platform. Two distant figures stand on the platform. The long-haired man asks, "WHAT DO YOU THINK OF IT, KILLUA?" A voice answers, "BEING TOLD THAT BY SOMEONE WHO ONLY THINKS WITH INTUITION... PFF! REALLY." Another retorts, "INTUITION?" The long-haired man concludes, "INTUITION." In the foreground, someone wonders, "AN APPOINTMENT ...? UNLESS THEY'RE INVITING US?"

Killua crouches on a broken ledge, peering through binoculars. He mutters, "THE IDEA OF AN APPOINTMENT IS POSSIBLE. WHAT ARE WE DOING THEN? WE OBSERVE WITHOUT MOVING." Gon stands nearby in the ruined corridor, replying, "EITHER IS LIKELY, BUT THEY DON'T KNOW OUR POSITIONS. IF IT'S AN INVITATION, THAT MEANS THEY DON'T KNOW WHERE WE ARE. THEIR MESSAGE IS 'SHOW YOUR SELVES.'" Gon adds, "US? YOU THINK THEY'VE SPOTTED US?" A close-up shows Killua's sweating face with a sudden "!!" reaction as he spots movement. In the distance, two figures stand on the platform while a phone rings with "RRA RRA RRA RRA." Back at the ledge, the long-haired man appears with the spiky-haired boy. Someone shouts, "HEY! IT'S NOBU-NAGA HERE. WHAT'S UP?" The long-haired man warns, "IF YOU SENSE THE LEAST BIT HOSTILITY IN THEIR EXPRESSIONS, WE LEAVE." Killua answers a call, "IF I RING YOUR CELLPHONE, YOU RUSH!" Gon yells urgently, "GON !!! I'M CUTTING. STAY ALERT!"

The long-haired man stands on a rooftop ledge holding a phone to his ear. "THEN I MIGHT HAVE SOME INFORMATION FOR YOU..." he says. Below, two small figures are visible on a distant platform. An off-panel voice asks, "WHAT DO YOU MEAN?" The man continues, "WE'RE TAILED, BUT THEY'RE NOT SHOWING THEMSELVES. I WAS WONDERING WHERE YOU WERE... AND WE CAN'T FIND THEM." Close-up panels show Killua's surprised face with sweat drops and the long-haired man's intense expression as he grips a thin object near his face. Suddenly a massive impact erupts with the huge sound effect "TADAN!!" shaking the scene.

Killua leaps through the air with one leg extended, surrounded by intense speed lines and the large "TAP" sound effect. In the large central panel the man stands with his back turned as countless impact sounds labeled TAK erupt around him, shattering wooden beams and walls in every direction with violent force. In a rain-streaked night, Gon leaps forward with his right leg extended while Uvogin lunges low, his massive hand clamping onto Gon's ankle with a sharp CATCH. The impact sends debris flying as Uvogin's grip tightens.
