A wide city street with tall buildings and a distant tower fills the top panel. A large speech bubble declares: "FROM NOW ON, WE'RE GOING TO BEGIN THE PREPARATION FOR HATSU." Below, inside a spacious room with a small table, Wing stands facing three boys—Gon, Killua, and Zushi. Speech bubbles read: "AFTER, YOU'LL HAVE TO REFINE THOSE BASIS AND ADD YOUR ORIGINALITY, AND YOU'LL HAVE YOUR OWN NEN." and "IF YOU MANAGE TO MASTER IT, YOU'LL HAVE ALL THE NECESSARY BASIS TO CONTROL THE NEN." In the bottom close-up, Wing holds a pen aloft and says "LET'S BEGIN."

A dense diagram fills the top panel explaining Nen: "IT'S DIVIDED INTO 6 CATEGORIES: EMISSION, TRANSFORMATION, REINFORCEMENT, MANIPULATION, REALISATION, AND SPECIALISATION." Another bubble states "THE HATSU IS THE TECHNIQUE CONSISTING IN RELEASING THE NEN. IN OTHER WORDS, YOU WILL FINALIZE YOUR NEN'S SKILLS." In the next row, Gon and Killua stand together while Wing points upward and says "WHAT'S IMPORTANT FOR YOU, IS TO FIND WHICH ONE FITS YOU." A close-up shows two fingers raised with the word "HERE..." Wing continues teaching: "THE FIRST APTITUDE IS THE ONE WE GET AT BIRTH, THE SECOND IS THE ONE WE ACQUIRE DURING OUR LIFETIMES." He adds that "NEN'S ABILITIES ARE LINKED TO THE CHARACTER OF EACH PERSON." Wing gestures while warning "IF YOU WANT TO LEARN ONE OF THESE SIX ABILITIES... YOU'LL HAVE TO FIND THE ONE THAT FITS YOU BEST, OTHERWISE YOU'LL HAVE A LOT OF DIFFICULTIES." He explains that "HE DEVELOPED ACCURACY OF HIS FIVE SENSES WHILE HAVING FUN OUTSIDE" and "FOLLOWING THE SAME PRINCIPLE, WE KNOW IN WHICH OF THE SIX NEN CATEGORIES WE BELONG TO ACCORDING TO THE QUALITIES OF THE AURA WE HAD SINCE WE WERE BORN." Gon is shown as an example: "FOR EXAMPLE, GON HAS A SUPPLE AND AGILE MUSCULAR STRUCTURE, WHICH HE WAS BORN WITH."

A large diagram explains the six Nen categories arranged around the central term HATSU. Reinforcement gives more physical strength or increases the efficiency of an object. Emission projects aura. Manipulation controls inert material and living material. Specialization is a particular aura with attributes others do not have. Materialisation makes aura materialized. Transformation changes the properties of the aura. The categories are placed in order of affinity. Below the diagram, panels show a man with glasses explaining examples. Guido uses spinning tops and his increased strength as weapons through Reinforcement. Hisoka uses his aura like gum via Transformation. The man notes that after Reinforcement stands Emission, for which you probably have affinity, then Transformation which is at the opposite end. He adds that if your aura predisposes you to Reinforcement, you will learn it easily and quickly.

The man with glasses continues explaining. He notes that Guido needed Manipulation as well for remote control of tops, limiting efficiency. Hisoka chose to create a double with Materialisation, but his bite on the tiger was a wonderful attack that could have made him a great professional with Reinforcement. His natural-born skill was Reinforcement. The man states that even if skilled, complex multi-abilities cause loss of everything due to lack of affinity. To acquire an ability without affinity requires excessive effort and a strong character. In a later panel the man confirms a question about knowing one's category. He concludes that in short, the person made bad choices. A small panel shows a hand holding a wine glass with SHH SFX. Hisoka stands alone in a hallway in one panel.

In a small training room, Gon, Killua, and Zushi stand watching a glass of water topped with a single leaf resting on a low table. Wing, seen from behind, announces the demonstration. A close-up shows the clear glass with the leaf floating on the surface. Wing, now facing forward in a button-up shirt, explains while gesturing at the glass: "IT'S A WAY OF DISTINCTION WE ARE TAUGHT AT SHINGEN DOJO. WE CAN ALSO USE IT TO PRACTICE HATSU." In a dramatic close-up, Wing holds the glass with both hands, fingers positioned near the rim. He continues, "THANKS TO THE CHANGE THAT UNDERGOES, WE UNDERSTAND. WE APPROACH WITH OUR HANDS AND START USING REN."

A close-up shows a thick, viscous liquid dripping heavily with the onomatopoeia "SHLUP". Gon stares with wide eyes and a shocked expression marked by "!!". The glass of water reacts with a splash and "PLOF" sound. Wing's hand holds the glass as the water level visibly rises and foams, with dramatic speed lines radiating outward. Text reads "IT HAS INCREASED WITH HIS STRENGTH ?!" and "THE QUANTITY OF WATER ...". In the final panel, Wing looks down at the glass and states, "IT SHOWS US THAT MY AURA HAS AFFINITIES WITH THE REINFORCEMENT." A narration box adds, "THE QUANTITY OF WATER CHANGED. IT'S A SIGN OF REINFORCEMENT."

Gon and Killua decide to settle who goes first with a quick round of Jan-Ken-Po. Gon wins and steps up to the glass. He concentrates, and the leaf resting on the water begins to move. Wing watches closely and declares that the leaf moving is the sign of the Manipulation category. Gon reacts with surprise and excitement. Killua leans in, eager for his own turn. The group focuses on the glass as the test continues.

Killua takes his turn holding the glass of water with the leaf. He focuses intently, but nothing happens at first. Gon and Wing observe closely. Killua tastes the water and notes a change in flavor. Wing explains that the taste of the water changing is the sign of the Transformation category. Killua looks surprised by the result while Gon reacts with curiosity.

Inside the training room Wing stands with one hand on his hip and addresses the three boys. "From now on, during the 4 weeks, you'll work on this practice so that the changes we just saw become much more flagrant," he declares. Gon, Zushi and Killua all shout "YES!!" in unison. The next sequence shows the boys practicing separately: Killua carefully balances a glass on a small table while concentrating, Zushi stands motionless in front of the same glass with intense focus, and Gon kneels on the floor scrubbing a large bowl. The final wide panel reveals a distant city skyline dominated by a tall central tower under a cloudy sky.

Killua, wrapped in bandages, answers the phone inside a room. "Hello? It's Gon," the caller says. Killua replies, "I was awaiting your call. You've decided the day well?" A small inset shows a finger pressing a button labeled "DIAL" and another panel shows the same finger pressing "CATCH." Gon, holding the receiver to his ear, states, "I registered for the 10th of July." Killua answers simply, "Yes." The final large panel shows the exterior of the Celestial Tower at night with many people gathered on the steps. A large speech bubble reads, "So, we'll confront your day in the Celestial Tower." Gon answers, "...OK."

Gon dashes forward with intense focus, his body low and arms pumping as motion lines streak behind him, a small black ball rolling at his feet. Below, Gon sits at a small table holding a delicate glass between his fingers, his eyes wide with concentration while a dark silhouette looms nearby. On the right, Hisoka's face fills the frame in close-up, his expression sly and half-lidded as he declares, "I'M IMPATIENT." with a small heart symbol beside the words.

A sweeping cityscape stretches across the top, skyscrapers and mountains under a cloudy sky. In the room below, Wing stands near the window with one hand on his hip and asks, "HOW ABOUT SHOWING ME THE RESULTS OF YOUR TRAINING?" Gon, Killua, and Zushi stand facing him. Wing then nods approvingly and says, "GOOD." In quick succession, Gon reacts with a sharp "GAN" sound effect as his head turns, followed by a relieved "FUUU" as he exhales, then stands upright holding the glass steady on the table.

Killua grips a glass of water tightly, his expression focused as the liquid suddenly overflows with a loud FLOC, splashing upward amid dramatic speed lines. In the lower panels, Leorio stands beside Gon and addresses Killua directly. "Your turn, Killua." "Yes," comes the reply. Wing holds up a wooden box containing a leaf floating in water and declares "Great" as the water level visibly rises. The leaf trembles with motion lines labeled ZAAAA. Killua reacts with wide-eyed excitement, shouting "Ooh!!!" while another voice exclaims "The water's completely over-flowed!!"

Killua leans forward intently, his hand hovering over a small dish as dark aura-like shapes swirl around him. In the next sequence, Gon watches excitedly while Wing raises a finger and states "That's hyper sweetened! It's like honey!!" Killua gives a thumbs-up and says "There." Wing then tells the boys "You're very skilled." In the final panel, Wing faces Gon and Killua from behind and announces "Both of you have passed," with an exclamation mark appearing beside the surprised pair.

Gon stares in shock, sweat dropping as he blurts out 'HUH?'. Killua and another boy react with surprise in smaller panels nearby. In a dramatic burst of speed lines, Wing appears floating forward, arms outstretched, declaring 'CONGRATULATIONS, YOU'VE PASSED THE SECONDARY HUNTER'S EXAM! AND YOU, GON...'. Gon and Killua react with wide eyes and question marks. Wing then explains in close-up, 'THE REASON IS THAT THE PROFESSIONAL HUNTERS WISH TO GET THE FORCE THAT RESEMBLES THEM. THE ACQUISITION OF THE NEN IS THE FIRST OF THE CONDITIONS TO BECOME A HUNTER.' He continues across panels, 'SO IT'S DANGEROUS FOR THIS EXAM TO BE PUBLICLY KNOWN. IT'S BECAUSE OF THIS REASON THAT WE ONLY LET PEOPLE WHO'VE PASSED THE FIRST TEST TO PASS THE SECOND TEST. BUT IF IT'S BADLY USED, IT BECOMES A WORRYING DESTRUCTIVE FORCE. STOPPING CRIMINALS WHO PILLAGE AND POACH IS THE ESSENTIAL ACTIVITY OF HUNTERS. SO A MINIMUM STRENGTH IS NECESSARY TO REPRESS CRIMINALS.'

Killua tells Gon 'DON'T HESITATE TO RETAKE THE MAIN EXAM. YOU WON'T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS PASSING IT.' Wing smiles and replies 'IN FACT, THE MASTER OF KUNG-FU SHINGEN DOJO IS NETERO. THE MASTER TAUGHT ME A LOT OF THINGS ABOUT YOU. YOU HAD ONLY TO ASK.' Gon looks thoughtful, saying 'MAYBE SOMETIME, IF I FEEL LIKE IT...'. Wing assures him 'I ASSURE YOU. NOW, YOU HAVE ALL THE NECESSARY QUALITIES.' In a lower panel Wing asks 'DO YOU KNOW ABOUT WHAT THE OTHER CANDIDATES ARE DOING?' and Gon answers 'YES.' Wing then inquires 'TELL ME, WING...' A large panel shows a stern bald man with an exclamation mark, while a long-haired figure stands in the background. Killua and Gon look up from below as someone states 'HANZO AND KURAPIKA HAVE ALREADY ACQUIRED NEN FROM OTHER MASTERS.'

Killua and Gon stand together as Killua replies, "Yeah." Gon adds, "Everyone pushes themselves hard!" Nearby, Leorio speaks to Kurapika and the others: "Leorio has planned to begin learning it after he passes the entrance exam at a medical university." Kurapika notes, "Illumi and Hisoka had already fulfilled the conditions since the beginning." Leorio raises a finger and says, "Last bit of advice. Pokkuri seems to have problems with the Ren." In a nighttime city view, a voice calls out "OKAY!" while another warns, "In your match tomorrow, don't push yourself too hard!!" The scene shifts to a busy daytime street where Wing faces Zushi and states, "Zushi, you keep practicing for four weeks." Zushi answers, "YES...!" Gon and Killua watch from a short distance with other bystanders around them.

Wing continues speaking to the group: "Yes. As for them, they're as gifted as one person out of 10,000,000 can be. Don't worry about that." He adds, "You're progressing quickly, only 1 person out of 100,000 has skills like yours. Be confident in yourself." Gon replies with determination, "That doesn't really comfort me... But someday, it's sure, I'll catch up with them." Killua answers, "Yes." The next panel shows Gon and Killua facing each other in fighting stances on a blank background. The page ends with dramatic text: "THE DAY OF THE MATCH." and "FINALLY..."
