One Piece is about the story of Luffy finding the most sought-after treasure in the world: the “One Piece.” Throughout the series, however, we have also seen various people consider various different things their “treasure.” A treasure, which to most people might not be considered valuable, can, due to a person's lived experiences, become the most valuable thing imaginable to them.
Through this, Oda has established the idea that treasure has a very broad definition, preparing us for the One Piece not necessarily being a treasure in the traditional sense.
Yes, Oda has said that it isn't something like “the friends we made along the way” and that it is something tangible. But that doesn't necessarily mean it can't be both. Something tangible can have multiple meanings and definitions.
I believe the One Piece is the Sun.
Our stand-in for the Sun, the Dawn that brings hope with it, the Dawn that brightens the darkness, and the metaphor for unwavering hope is none other than Monkey D. Luffy, the future Pirate King.
The D. Connection
I believe the D., as many have speculated, represents the rising Sun.
What does Luffy's iconic straw hat look like?
A rising Sun.
What colors is Luffy typically depicted in?
Red and yellow — the same colors commonly used to depict the Sun.
The One Piece will turn the world upside down.
When the Sun rises, it literally turns the world upside down in a metaphorical sense: it transforms night into day. Darkness is replaced by light.
And this connects directly to the themes of the story.
Why Is It Called “One Piece”?
The Sun, when it has not fully risen, is only partially visible above the horizon.
A D can be seen as a representation of this: half of the Sun, only partially visible.
But once the Sun has completely risen, the world is changed. The darkness is gone, and the Sun appears in all its glory.
It is finally whole.
It is finally “One Piece.”
This also connects with so many of the themes throughout the story — bringing people together, bringing the oceans together, bringing generations together, and ultimately uniting everything into one piece.
I believe the core message and theme of the series is unity and hope.
And the arbiter of that message in our story is none other than Monkey D. Luffy.
The Sun God.
The Dawnbringer.
And, ultimately,
The One Piece.
