Crocus joined the Roger Pirates to look for the pirate crew connected to Laboon. Rayleigh says that finding a particular crew was Crocus's main reason for accompanying them; the Straw Hats connect his search with Brook and his companions. ch. 506, p. 11
Crocus also served as the ship's doctor. The Roger Pirates recruited him from Twin Capes because he could ease Roger's suffering from an incurable illness. He travelled with them for three years. His personal search explains why he accepted the voyage, while Roger's illness explains why the crew needed his medical help. ch. 506, pp. 10–11
