Roger needed Oden for his knowledge to reach the final island. Roger explained that four red stones marked with inscriptions served as clues to the final island and that the World Government had banned their deciphering. ch. 966, p. 8 He then asked Whitebeard directly to borrow Oden for one year as his last request. ch. 966, p. 9 Oden himself stated that with Roger he could reach the final island. ch. 966, p. 9 Roger Pirates crew members told Oden he was only there because the captain needed his knowledge and would not accept him as quickly as their captain did. ch. 966, p. 13 "You're only here because the captain needs your 'knowledge'..." ch. 966, p. 13 "Please let me borrow Oden for one year, Newgate!! This is my last request!!!" ch. 966, p. 9 "With him by my side, I know I can get to the final island!!!" ch. 966, p. 9 Oden joined the crew after this exchange and the voyage continued with the stated goal of locating the final island.
