Magellan has the Doku Doku Fruit, which gives him poison-producing powers. His introduction identifies him as a poison man who ate that fruit. ch. 528, p. 5
Those powers make direct contact dangerous during Luffy's fight with him. Magellan attacks with Hydra, a poison dragon, and uses Venom Road during the pursuit. Bon Clay warns that Luffy cannot safely touch his opponent, but Luffy continues trying to reach Ace. ch. 534
The danger increases during the breakout, when Magellan uses Venom Demon: Hell's Judgment. Luffy and Mr. 3 can only hold it back briefly before escaping with the other prisoners. ch. 547, pp. 12–14
