One Piece Chapter 1101: Dear Bonney

A full-color spread shows Monkey D. Luffy lounging with a cigarette, wearing a black bowler hat and sunglasses, surrounded by bottles and a large black cat in a matching hat. Nico Robin sits nearby in a white top and sunglasses.

Three years ago at Mt. Colubo in the Kingdom of Goa, East Blue—Luffy's hometown—a man in a spotted hat looks up and mutters 'GUM-GUM...'. The scene shifts to a massive explosion of rock and debris as a small figure plummets through the air. A voice yells 'AXE!!'. In the lower panels the same man stares intensely, thinking 'DRAGON...', while a tiger roars 'GAAAARGH!' amid flying debris and impact effects.

A hooded figure with a scarred face and glasses stands in shadow, warning, "If you keep talking about this, you may as well kill me yourself." Another voice replies from off-panel, "There was a young boy there... Not only that, but when I went to stretch my legs earlier, I found a remote village on the outskirts... You seem familiar with this island..." The hooded man reacts sharply, "I'm sorry. I'll forget what I saw." Close-ups show his intense glare and clenched jaw as he mutters, "A child is their parent's weak spot." He questions, "What do you mean...I" In a flashback panel, young Luffy grins widely while carrying a sack, declaring, "After I set sail and get my crew... I'll save it for when I'm up against a super strong enemy!! What an awesome finishing move!!" The hooded figure watches silently from the side.

Young Monkey D. Luffy leaps dynamically with a massive kick, shouting, "BLAM!! I'll give 'em a Gum-Gum Axe to the face!! I won't ever let that happen! But if anyone tries it......I gotta be ready for when someone tries to take them away." A tiger-like beast growls below him as Luffy asks, "Pretty cool, rightI" The creature yawns, "Don't worry, I don't eat wimps!" and lets out a "GRUMBLE... GAAWN..." A large "ドーン" sound effect rumbles. Luffy's wanted poster-style box labels him "MONKEY D. LUFFY (AGE 16)". Startled, Luffy sweats and wonders, "Weird. What was that feeling just nowI It gave me the chills." He turns, calling out, "Who's thereI!" while a voice from the side mutters, "HMI!" and "RING... RING RING..." Luffy continues, "I'm gonna whoop them all before I set sail! I bet there's still some tough opponents around here!"

On the sea, a ship flies a jolly roger as voices shout, "KUMA, COME IN! WHAT ARE YOU DOINGI!" and "We need to get to the wounded to the nearest hospital." Pirates panic, "They came out of nowhere!! Some pirates fled after raiding a nearby merchant ship!" A crew member yells, "Your orders are to blow those lowlifes out of the water!" The ship bears the name "KID" on its sail. A man pleads, "Wait!! We didn't mean nothin' by it! We'll give everything back!" while another orders, "Turn yourselves in." A woman with a headscarf begs, "Thank you so much!! We thought they weren't going to make it...!" as a stern figure commands, "I'll go on ahead after them. The rest of you should follow as soon as you can." A box reads "KUMA! RESPOND IMMEDIATELY!" A letter appears: "Dear Bonney... I long to see your bright, smiling face......as you experience such wonders for yourself!" The narration states, "The world is full of beauty that can't be captured in photos or picture books." The ship sails into the sunset with birds overhead.

A young girl with light hair stares anxiously, repeatedly asking, "Is it here yetI Is it here yetI Is it here yetI Is it here yetI" A loud "ガチャッ!!" sounds as a mailbox opens. Narration reads, "Meanwhile, in the kingdom of Sorbet..." The girl reaches into the mailbox, thinking, "But Daddy said he'd write a whole bunch of letters... Now dear, letters have to go on a long trek of their own, y'know." A man in a top hat complains, "I'm sure he's very busy with work. That, or the news coos keep messing up." Birds fly as the girl wonders, "How about nowI" A newspaper delivery occurs with "A NEWSPAPER..." and "FLAP FLAP" sounds, plus a "THUD" as it lands. The girl picks it up, noting, "A newspaper... and another heart-warming letter..." while a cheerful round-faced person in a hat smiles and says, "One will turn up sooner or later, Bonney, you'll see." Cooing birds fly past with "COO" sounds.

A young girl with long hair stands sadly outside a stone building, sighing "AWWW...". Nearby, a bearded man in a dark outfit holds up a letter and says, "NAH, JUST THE MORNING PAPER." A woman asks, "IS IT A LETTERI!" The man replies, "YES, MA'AM. PUT THIS IN THE CHURCH'S MAILBOX." The girl walks away with another figure. In the next scene, the girl, now older with wavy hair and a torn top, angrily tears open envelopes marked "To bonney" and "TO BONNEY♡", exclaiming "UGH... HOW MUSHY CAN YOU GETI!" as "TEAR! Bonney and another girl discuss hiding: "TO BE SAFE, YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY, 'A TALENTED HAWK HIDES ITS CLAWS...'" "WHY'RE WE HIDIN' BONNEY'S ABILITIES AGAINI" "HEY, GRANNY CONNEY..." They sip a bitter drink, with one noting "AS IF! THIS IS JUST SOME HORRID LEMON FLAVORED PLACEBO!" "THAT JUST MEANS IT'S WORKING!" and "YUCK! DOES THE MEDICINE HAFTA BE THIS BITTERI!" A massive futuristic lab complex labeled "NAVY SCIENCE DIVISION - LAB 08" appears with the exclamation "AMAZING, DOCTOR!" and sound effect "ドーン!!" as someone says "I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DID IT!"

Inside a high-tech lab, a woman in a hat tells a large cyborg-like figure, "THE HUMAN THAT LACKS FREE WILL OR THE CLONE THAT DOESN'T. I WONDER WHICH OF US HAS THE MOST CHECKERED FATE..." The cyborg Kuma replies, "KUMA, I HEARD YOU'RE GOING LOSE YOUR SENSE OF INDIVIDUALITY." A suited man adjusts his tie, saying "PE PE PEI I FEEL LIGHT AS A FEATHER!" and "I MUST ADMIT, THAT CUT SUITS YOU♡" while another warns "KNOCK IT OFF, STUSSY. YOU'RE JUST AS HUMAN AS THE REST OF US!" Deeper in the facility, a scientist with wild hair discusses, "...BUT WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WERE ASKED TO KILL A CHILDI" "TILL PUT IT LIKE THIS... YOU MAY ALREADY HAVE A REPUTATION FOR BEING TOTALLY OBEDIENT..." "...WHEN MY PERSONALITY IS ERASEDI" "WHAT EXACTLY SHOULD I EXPECT..." A small child sits nearby as the scientist continues, "WHAT IT MEANS IS... YOU'LL LOSE NOT ONLY YOUR MEMORIES BUT ANY EMPATHY OR HUMANITY HOLDING YOU BACK FROM FULFILLING SUCH A COMMAND." Later, a man checks a device and says "ANOTHER LETTERI" The scientist reacts with shock, "THAT BEING SAID, YOU SHOULD RETAIN SOME DEGREE OF FREE WILL UNTIL THE PROCESS IS FULLY COMPLETE!!" and "THAT'LL GIVE YOU ROUGHLY ONE MORE YEAR..."

A close-up of Vegapunk's face shows him thinking, "BONNEY DESERVES TO KNOW HOW I FEEL. I WANT TO SEND HER A WHOLE LIFETIME'S WORTH OF LOVE BEFORE THIS YEAR IS OVER. I'LL KEEP WRITING TILL I RUN OUT OF TIME..." Letters arrive with messages like "Happy Birthday, Bonney!" and "I'm back at Vegapunk's lab. Things are busy around here—" Bonney, now older in a dark outfit and hat, smiles and says "HEH HEH!♡" "BONNEY'S ALMOST 9 NOW. I WONDER HOW BIG SHE'S GOTTENI!" "HOW SWEET." A voice asks, "I don't know when you'll get this letter, but... DO YOU THINK SHE'S CHANGED A LOTI" "AH HA HA!!" The final spread erupts in celebration as a crowd cheers "CONGRATULATIONS!!" "BONNE!!!" "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!" with confetti, party poppers, and joyful expressions filling the panels.

A young Bonney devours a giant pizza with delight, cheeks stuffed as she cries out, "SO GOOOD!!" Nearby, she cheers, "WOO HOO!! THANKS!! I LOVE IT!!" while an unseen speaker adds, "GRANNY CONNEY MADE AN EXTRA SPECIAL GIANT PIZZA FOR YOU!!" Later, inside a stone room filled with scattered toys and a toppled chair, Bonney searches anxiously. "THERE'S STILL NO LETTER NOW..." she says. "NOTHING..." she mutters while holding her head. She suddenly collapses with a loud "KERCHAK", sprawled on the floor. In a quiet close-up, tears well in her eyes as she whispers, "DADDY..." A flashback panel shows her younger self pleading, "YOU SAID YOU'D WRITE..." She concludes softly, "I'M NINE NOW..."

A young man with a scar recounts Kuma's past: "THEN HE SWOOPED IN TO SAVE US AT THE LAST MINUTE. AFTER THAT, HE LEFT WITHOUT SAYING A WORD!!" Another adds, "YEAH, IT'S JUST LIKE ALL THOSE OTHER TIMES. THE REVOLUTIONARY FORCES WERE ON THE ROPES..." The scene shifts to a ruined church labeled "REVOLUTIONARY ARMY HQ - BALTIGO" as narration states, "KUMA CAME TO THE RESCUE AGAINI" and "AND SO, ANOTHER HALF A YEAR PASSED WITHOUT A SINGLE LETTER REACHING THE CHURCH..." In the present, an old man with a cross-shaped scar says, "I'M SURE HE HAS HIS REASONS... FOR KEEPING US IN THE DARK." Revolutionaries discuss, "IF KUMA WISHES NOT TO BE FOLLOWED, WE HAVE TO RESPECT THAT." A flashback shows a stern woman yelling at young Bonney, "WE'VE BEEN TOLD TO KEEP YOU UNDER CLOSE SUPERVISION UNTIL YOUR 10TH BIRTHDAY! NOT A CHANCE, BONNEY-CHAN! YOU MUST STAY PUT!" Bonney retorts, "YOU LIAR! VEGAPUNK SAID I'D BE FINE AFTER A YEAR... AND THAT WAS A YEAR AGO!! I FORBID IT!!" She runs outside happily, "I CAN FINALLY GO OUTSIDE!! LOOK! THE STONES ARE COMPLETELY GONE! I'M ALL BETTER!!"

The cross-scarred elder explains, "APPARENTLY, YOUR DISEASE HAS BEEN CURED FOR A WHILE NOW. REALLYI!" A flashback shows pirates in town as someone whispers, "THEY LET IT SLIP WHILE THEY WERE GETTING DRINKS IN TOWN." "ALPHA AND THE OTHERS ARE GOVERNMENT INTELLIGENCE AGENTS..." Young Bonney frowns, "YEAH... ALSO, I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT KUMA WOULDN'T SEND A SINGLE LETTER." The elder continues, "WHY WOULD THEY KEEP A PERFECTLY HEALTHY YOUNG GIRL TRAPPED INSIDE FOR ANOTHER SIX MONTHSI WE MUST BE MISSING SOMETHING..." He adds, "I'M SURE THE PIRATES AND SEA BEASTS WILL TURN TAIL ONCE THEY SEE YOUR AVERAGE FISHERMEN IN ACTION!! THEY'LL BE THERE TO HELP YOU FIND KUMA!! GYOGYO AND THE REST AREN'T YOUR AVERAGE FISHERMEN!!!" Bonney replies, "I SEE. TAKE CARE. I'M GOING BACK TO THE PALACE." The elder smiles, "HEAD FOR THE PORT, BONNEY!! I'VE ALREADY SORTED EVERYTHING OUT WITH GYOGYO AND THE OTHERS. CAN I REALLY DO ITI! SAIL THE SEAS, AND GO FIND YOUR FATHER!!"

Bonney steps outside for the first time, gazing at the sky. "IT'S A MIRACLE!! THERE REALLY IS A GOD!!" she exclaims. "BONNEY'S ACTUALLY WALKING OUTSIDE..." someone notes. She marvels, "THERE'S THE SUN!! LOOK AT THE SKY!! THERE'S SO MUCH DIRT... AND GRASS..." A small robot-like figure watches from afar. Excited townsfolk shout, "GYOGYO!! TOTS!! POTATO!! LOOK, EVERYONE!! I'M REALLY OUTSIDE!!" as Bonney runs toward a spotted ship. "BONNEY!! OVER HERE!!" a voice calls. The ship sails away with a jolly roger as Bonney waves, "WOW!! SET SAAAAIL!! WE MADE THE SHIP LOOK LIKE A PIZZA FOR YOU!!" An old woman on the ship yells, "IT'S ME, BONNEY. YOU LYING OLD PRUNE!! WHERE'S BONNEYI! I JUST SAW THE QUEEN DOWAGER OUTSIDE... WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ONI!"

A massive close-up shows Luffy in his Nika form stretching dramatically as narration boxes explain the government's hostage situation: "THE GOVERNMENT WOULD SOON RECEIVE WORD......THAT THEIR HOSTAGE, BONNEY, ESCAPED TO FIND HER FATHER." Young Bonney reaches upward desperately while the text continues, "IT WOULD GO FROM A HUMBLE FISHING BOAT TO AN INFAMOUS PIRATE SHIP IN THE NEW ERA— LIKE LUFFY AND THE OTHERS, HER VESSEL WOULD GAIN FAME..." Luffy yells, "GIMME A NIKA-ISH FUTURE!!" In the upper right panels, a furious woman with glasses lunges forward shouting, "I'LL BET YOU TO WITHIN AN INCH OF YOUR LIFE! YOU THINK YOU CAN GET AWAY FROM MEI!" as allies cry, "ALPHA FOUND US!! HOLD IT RIGHT THERE!!" She declares, "I'LL KEEP YOU CHAINED UP DAY AND NIGHT, THAT'LL MAKE THINGS MUCH EASIER! ENOUGH OF THIS CHARADE!" Below, a young girl with pigtails asks, "WHAT DID NIKA LOOK LIKEI" while another voice wonders, "NO ONE KNOWS..." A small figure says, "HEY, DADDY..." On the right, a man in a top hat yells, "THAT'S ONE OF THE SIX POWERS!! SHE'S FLYING TOWARD US!! I WAS ORDERED TO ELIMINATE ANY ACCOMPLICES!!" The bottom panels show close-ups of shocked faces as someone recalls, "AND THERE WAS NO LIMIT TO WHAT HE COULD DO IN A FIGHT... BUT THEY SAY HIS BODY WAS ALL RUBBERY..." Bonney's face appears in shock as a voice calls, "BONNEYI!" The final large panel erupts with the attack name "DISTORTED FUTURE!!" amid motion lines and debris as the chapter ends with "...CH. 1101 /END BREAK NEXT WEEK."
