What happens in chapter 43

The Going Merry approaches the floating restaurant Baratie with Johnny and Yosaku leading the way. A Marine ship arrives carrying Lieutenant Fullbody, who questions the crew about their flag and quickly defeats Johnny and Yosaku when they challenge him. Fullbody orders a cannon fired at the Merry, but Luffy deflects the shot with Gum Gum Balloon, sending the cannonball crashing into the Baratie roof instead.

YOU FREQUENT THE GOVERNMENT OFFICES ON SOME BUSINESS. WAIT A MINUTE, I THINK I'VE SEEN YOU TWO BEFORE. SO YOU'VE FINALLY BEEN CAUGHT BY PIRATES, HAVE YOU?" Johnny and Yosaku get angry at the insult. Johnny says, "HEY, YOSAKU, I THINK THIS BRO'S STICKING IT TO US." Yosaku replies, "WELL, WE CAN'T JUST LET SOME GUY WALK AROUND, CALLING US 'SMALL TIME.' THIS AIN'T GONNA NET US A SINGLE BELI, BUT I THINK WE OUGHTA TEACH THIS KID HOW TO KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT." They draw their swords and leap towards Fullbody's ship, yelling, "YOU COCKY LITTLE YUPPIE!!!"

Johnny and Yosaku are quickly defeated and lie groaning on the deck of the Merry, battered and bruised. Johnny mutters, "A-ALMOST HAD HIM..." Yosaku groans, "I-IT WAS A CLOSE ONE..." Zoro looks down at them and asks, "THE HELL ARE YOU TWO DOING?" Luffy asks bluntly, "YOU SURE YOU GUYS AREN'T SUPER WEAK?" Usopp stammers, "N-NO, IT'S JUST THAT THAT GUY'S NOT TOO SHABBY HIMSELF." On the Marine ship, Fullbody stands next to a beautiful woman named Moodie. Moodie tugs his arm and says, "DARLING, ENOUGH BEATING UP ON WEAKLINGS, LET'S GET GOING ALREADY." Fullbody agrees, "AH YES, LET'S DO THAT. CONSIDER YOURSELVES LUCKY PIRATES BECAUSE I'M ON BREAK TODAY. I ONLY CAME HERE TO EAT AT THE RESTAURANT. BUT CONSIDER YOUR LIVES FORFEIT THE NEXT TIME YOU RUN INTO ME WHEN I'M NOT OFF-DUTY."

Meanwhile, on the Marine ship, Fullbody gives an order: "SINK'EM." A Marine readies a cannon and replies, "YES, SIR!" Usopp panics, yelling, "GUYS, WE'RE IN DEEP SHIT! THE BASTARD'S AIMING HIS CANNON AT US!" Zoro reacts with shock, "WHAT!?"

As the cannon fires, Usopp screams in terror, "HE FIRED!" Zoro yells, "LUFFY, WHAT'RE YOU DOING!?" Luffy runs to the front of the ship, inhaling deeply. He shouts, "LEAVE IT TO ME! GOMU GOMU NO... BALLOON!!!" Luffy inflates his torso to a massive size just as the cannonball hits him. The cannonball sinks into his rubbery stomach and then bounces right back. Luffy yells, "YOU CAN HAVE YOUR CANNONBALL BACK!" The crew and the Marines watch in absolute shock. Exclamations of "WHA!?", "THE HELL!?", and "!!?" fill the air as the cannonball flies back.

The cannonball bounces off Luffy's inflated stomach, but his aim is off. Instead of hitting the Marine ship, the cannonball flies directly toward the Baratie. Zoro yells angrily, "JUST WHO ARE YOU GIVING IT TO, YOU DUMBASS!?" The cannonball crashes into the roof of the Baratie, causing a large explosion and sending debris flying. Luffy deflates and falls onto his back, looking horrified at what he's done. Zoro stares in shock, his jaw dropping. Nami facepalms in exasperation, groaning, "UGH..."

Inside the Baratie, the atmosphere is elegant and bustling with customers. Fullbody and Moodie are seated at a table. Other patrons whisper among themselves, noticing the Marine officer. "LOOK, THE ONE SITTING OVER THERE IS LT. FULLBODY...", "NO WAY, A MARINE LIEUTENANT IS EATING HERE?", "LOOK HOW GRACEFUL HE IS..." Moodie smiles and says, "AMAZING, YOU'RE THE CENTER OF ATTENTION." Fullbody smirks confidently, "OH PLEASE, I'M SURE THEY'RE ALL LOOKING AT YOU." He swirls his wine glass, sniffs it, and declares loudly, "MM! THIS DELICATE SCENT! IT MUST BE FROM MICQUEOT OF THE NORTHERN LANDS! AND THIS SLIGHT SOURNESS MIXED WITH A THICK, DRY TASTE... THIS WINE MUST BE... ITELZBULGER STEIN! AM I WRONG, WAITER!?"

A blond man in a black double-breasted suit stands next to Fullbody's table, holding a plate of soup and smoking a cigarette. Moodie tries to ease the tension, asking, "ARE YOU VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE? ABOUT WINE, I MEAN." Fullbody stammers, "AH, YES... BUT I THINK MY TONGUE'S A LITTLE OFF TODAY FOR SOME REASON..." Suddenly, a loud crash interrupts them. Outside, the roof of the Baratie is shown heavily damaged from Luffy's deflected cannonball. Inside, a voice yells, "OWNER, ARE YOU ALRIGHT!?" Another gruff voice responds, "YOU THINK I'M ALRIGHT? ANYWAYS, ENOUGH YAPPING AND GET BACK TO WORK!" A large man with a peg leg stands amidst the rubble. A cook stammers, "B-BUT SIR! YOUR BODY'S...!" The man glares and shouts, "ARE YOU TRYING TO MAKE ME ANGRY!?"

I'M STILL INJURED ALL OVER MY BODY THANKS TO YOU! IF YOU GOT NO MONEY, THEN YOU'LL HAVE TO WORK IT OFF..." Luffy agrees readily, "SURE THING. I'LL MAKE IT UP TO YOU." Zeff declares his terms: "YOU'LL WORK ODD JOBS AROUND MY RESTAURANT WITHOUT PAY FOR A FULL YEAR! ONLY THEN, I'LL FORGIVE YOU." Luffy's eyes bug out in shock as he yells, "O-ONE YEAR!?" Meanwhile, back on the Going Merry, Zoro leans back and says, "LUFFY'S SURE TAKING AWHILE... YOU DON'T THINK THEY'LL FORCE HIM TO WORK HERE FOR LIKE A MONTH OR SOMETHING, DO YOU?" Usopp replies, "HE SHOULD JUST EXPLAIN THAT IT WAS ALL THE MARINE'S FAULT. THAT IDIOT'S TOO HONEST FOR HIS OWN GOOD..." Johnny suggests, "HEY, LET'S GO IN AND SEE HIM! Back in the dining area, Fullbody yells loudly, "OOH WAITER!!!" Sanji, standing nearby, turns and says, "HUH?" Instead of attending to Fullbody, Sanji walks over to Moodie, completely ignoring the Marine. Sanji says, "I ALREADY TOLD YOU I'M NOT A WAITER. MY, MY. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL LADY WE HAVE HERE. A PLEASURE TO MEET YOU, MISS. OUR SELECTION OF WINE IS EXCELLENT! HOW ABOUT YOU AND I SHARE A GLASS OF WINE OVER THERE?" Moodie blushes and replies, "WELL..." Fullbody, furious at being ignored, slams his hand on the table and shouts, "HEY! IS IT CUSTOMARY FOR THIS RESTAURANT TO SERVE ITS SOUP WITH INSECTS!? INSECTS...?" Fullbody smirks evilly to himself, thinking, "HEH HEH. I PUT THIS BUG IN THE SOUP MYSELF... THIS IS WHAT YOU GET FOR EMBARRASSING ME EARLIER ON...! I'M GONNA RUIN THIS RESTAURANT'S REPUTATION!"

Fullbody explodes in anger, yelling, "WHAT DID YOU SAY!? I'M A PAYING CUSTOMER! FOR A DAMN COOK, AREN'T YOU QUITE FULL OF YOURSELF!?" Moodie tries to intervene, pleading, "FULLBODY, STOP! JUST FORGIVE HIM!" Several cooks rush into the dining room in a panic, shouting, "AGH! WE HAVE TO STOP HIM! STOP THE ASSISTANT HEAD CHEF SANJI!" Sanji looks at Fullbody with a serious expression and asks, "CAN MONEY... FILL YOUR STOMACH UP?"

In a sudden and violent move, Sanji grabs Fullbody by the face and jaw and lifts the Marine officer completely off the ground with one hand. Fullbody's face is bloodied, and he gasps in pain. Sanji, still holding his cigarette in his mouth, glares coldly at Fullbody and says, "REMEMBER THIS... GOING AGAINST A COOK ON THE SEAS, IS TANTAMOUNT TO SUICIDE... DON'T YOU DARE WASTE FOOD..."

Sanji grabs Fullbody by the face and lifts him off the ground while warning that going against a cook on the seas is tantamount to suicide and that food must never be wasted.
