Buggy
Buggy is a pirate captain known as Buggy the Clown who leads the Buggy Pirates crew. He is a Devil Fruit user whose body can split apart and he pursues treasure while maintaining a circus-themed ship and base of operations. Buggy has past ties to Shanks from their shared time as young crew members and later forms alliances such as with Alvida and involvement in Buggy's Delivery as its chairman.
Appearance
Buggy wears a striped outfit and a crossbone hat while displaying a prominent red clown nose that draws immediate attention in any gathering. His clothing includes a black bandana with a jagged teeth design during earlier voyages and a flowing cape in later public appearances. The captain maintains a wide grin during celebrations and shows intense expressions when provoked.12
The pirate captain's ship features circus decorations including a large tent-like structure on deck and a massive cannon mounted on the bow. Buggy's Jolly Roger displays a red nose motif that identifies his crew from a distance.3
Personality
Buggy reacts violently to any mention involving his nose and his crew shows immediate terror at their captain's anger. He destroyed a village after children mocked his nose and villagers abandoned the area out of fear. The captain laughs wildly during moments of triumph and displays extreme shock when past connections surface unexpectedly.4
Buggy places high value on treasure and becomes excited at the prospect of maps leading to riches. He shouts that his life worries will end upon discovering a marked sea bed location and laughs about keeping such maps to himself exclusively. The captain affirms that pirates will get off their ship one day to pursue greater loot.5
Abilities and powers
Buggy activates his Devil Fruit power to separate his body parts and controls multiple detached sections simultaneously during combat. He uses the Bara Bara Cannon technique by firing detached hands and keeps his upper half airborne while attacking from multiple angles. The ability allows him to remain unharmed when descending through dangerous areas such as blade leaves.67
Buggy's head can detach and float independently while he throws opponents with great force. He stabs through objects with a knife after separating his body and activates the power in panic to avoid direct strikes.8
History
Young Buggy and young Shanks served together on a pirate ship where Buggy discovered a Devil Fruit and a treasure map on deck. Buggy ate what appeared to be the fruit only to later admit it had been switched in advance and he clutched the map while declaring his life worries would end. The two discussed leaving the ship one day and meeting again as enemies if their paths diverged.910
Buggy and Shanks parted ways on the day their captain was executed after Shanks asked Buggy to come along. Buggy screamed that he would never be part of Shanks' crew and the two went separate routes with rumors later indicating Buggy continued as a pirate.11
Youth aboard Roger ship
Young Buggy sailed as a cabin boy with young Shanks aboard Gol D. Roger's vessel where the pair played cards and later appeared in silhouettes near a treehouse in Elbaf. Buggy discovered a Devil Fruit and treasure map during this period yet later admitted the fruit had been swapped. On the day of their captain's execution Shanks invited Buggy to join him but Buggy refused with a defiant shout and the two parted ways.121314
Buggy met Rayleigh roughly ten years ago on an island while missing his straw hat and left arm. Luffy remained unaware that Shanks and Buggy had served as cabin boys on Roger's ship. Shanks later recalled that he wanted to be a carefree pirate with Buggy and noted that Buggy and Shanks were always like sons to a former Roger Pirates member.151617
Impel Down imprisonment
Buggy was sent to Impel Down level 4 for burning torture and warned of deeper levels holding stronger criminals possibly including Ace. He offered guidance to level 4 while explaining his split body power and the layout of the first underground floor. After receiving Captain John's armband Buggy realized its value as a treasure mark yet was used as a battering ram by Luffy to crash through walls.1819
Escape and Cross Guild formation
Buggy escaped Impel Down and rallied prisoners who chanted his name while demanding he lead them away from Marine Headquarters. He received a carrier bat letter from the government and later learned of the Shichibukai system's abolition which stripped his rights and prompted rage at being treated as a lowly pirate. Buggy formed Cross Guild with Crocodile and Mihawk after owing money from a prior loan and presented himself as chairman despite extreme fear toward his partners.202122
Relationships
Buggy maintains a crew that obeys his commands without hesitation and cheers loudly at his orders during celebrations. The pirates apologize profusely when recognizing threats and shift blame among themselves when confronted. Buggy allied with Alvida specifically to locate Luffy and the pair operated together with Alvida ordering the crew while Buggy laughed wildly. He later formed Buggy's Delivery as chairman and received contact from mercenaries while his crew handled dispatch requests.2425

Past ties to Shanks and Roger Pirates
Buggy reacted with explosive shock upon being identified as a pirate mastermind and screamed in disbelief when Marines revealed he was once a member of Gol D. Roger's crew and that Shanks considered him a brother. Prisoners yelled in excited awe that Buggy knew Red Hair Shanks and was part of the Pirate King's crew. Buggy thought internally that government attention was now a risk due to the revealed past.29
Major battles
Buggy confronts Luffy directly after the pirate gang's defeat in a town street where Luffy and Zoro defeat multiple Buggy pirates. Luffy requests the Grand Line map from Buggy during a rainy confrontation that triggers Buggy's visible shock and extreme anger at Luffy's claim to be King of the Pirates.30
Buggy's head remains separated while screaming as Luffy tickles his detached foot and Nami restrains his body. He attacks using his split-body Devil Fruit ability and lands a direct kick on Luffy using his separated leg after holding a large sack claimed to contain treasure.31
Buggy looms over Luffy with a blade on the execution platform while declaring sorry and Luffy replies but it looks like I'm dead. A massive lightning strike tears through the stormy sky above Loguetown's town square and shatters the air with a deafening crack as the execution platform erupts.32
Confrontation with Luffy
Buggy confronted Luffy after the pirate gang's defeat in a town street where Luffy requested the Grand Line map during a rainy confrontation. Buggy declared that grabbing the rope was most likely impossible and threatened to tear Luffy's stretched arm to shreds while yanking yet was yanked off-balance and activated bara bara emergency escape with a pop sound as his body split apart. He laughed wildly after triggering a large explosion.3334
Planning against Luffy and Cross Guild tensions
Buggy planned to kill Luffy after noting the higher Straw-Hat's bounty would raise his own and explained that the targets had become full-fledged pirates of the Grand Line with bounties of 100 million and 60 million. He pointed to an informant who could reveal Luffy's location and urged his crew to celebrate while Alvida questioned the plan. Buggy's subordinates later believed Crocodile was acting to save them during an attack on Marines though Buggy feared the confrontation over unpaid debt.3536
