Chapter 589 summary
Young Luffy lies face down in the grass after a toast to freedom with his brothers. Sabo shouts from a cliff overlooking the sea that he, Ace, and Luffy must someday leave the country and gain their freedom. Luffy sits up bandaged and tells Ace that their hidden treasure is gone, then grips his straw hat and vows to grow stronger and stronger so he can protect anything and never lose anyone again. Luffy calls out to the distant Sabo to make the same promise. Ace retorts that Luffy should worry about himself, sparking an argument where each brother claims the other is weaker. Ace sobs and promises Luffy he will not die no matter what, recalling Sabo’s request to look after him. The brothers reflect that Sabo died without true freedom and resolve to live without regrets. Standing together on the cliff, they declare they will set sail at age seventeen to become pirates with more freedom than anyone in the world.
