Chapter 279 summary

Citizens on Skypiea flee in panic while questioning Conis about the missing militia members. Captain McKinley of the White Berets steps in to urge the crowd to evacuate and promises to handle the militia, then privately reflects that Enel destroyed his own homeland of Birka six years earlier and that the White Berets betrayed the previous god to serve him. Conis reassures McKinley after he expresses regret over their choices, then runs off to rejoin her pirate friends. On the deck of the Ark Maxim, Luffy faces Enel and demands to know what makes him a god. Enel attacks with massive lightning strikes including El Thor and a giant lightning dragon, but Luffy remains completely unharmed. Nami realizes the lightning has no effect because Luffy is made of rubber. Luffy lands a kick to Enel's stomach followed by a punch to his face that sends him crashing to the deck. Enel lies crumpled and groaning while Nami concludes that Luffy is his only natural enemy.
