The doctor screams "AHHHHH!" with wide eyes as black spots appear. Chopper reacts with "AH-" and "HMI" while a voice asks, "DOC, WHAT'S THATI" Chopper notes, "THAT'S THE FIRST TIME I'VE SEEN IT DO THAT." "HEY, CHOPPER!" someone yells. Kureha walks away smiling, "DOC WAS REAL HAPPY... I ACTUALLY CURED SOMEBODY! THEN I'LL BE OFF!" In a large close-up, Chopper grins widely and declares, "I GUARANTEE IT!" Kureha looks back and says, "YOU'RE GOING TO BE A WONDERFUL DOCTOR!"

Chapter 144 summary

Chopper gives Hiriluk a bowl of Amiudake soup and Hiriluk spits it out in disgust before reassuring the reindeer that good medicine tastes bad. Hiriluk then celebrates the completion of his thirty-year experiment when a beaker reacts, declaring that he can now bring cherry blossoms to the winter island. He leaves the castle to visit Kureha, asking her to spread the panacea dust and teach Chopper medicine, but she refuses and violently kicks him out. Townspeople panic over the collapse of the MD-20 doctors while Kureha realizes Hiriluk intends to sacrifice himself at the castle. Chopper learns from Kureha that the mushroom he fed Hiriluk is lethal poison and runs screaming into the snow. Hiriluk forces his way onto the ropeway to Drum Castle, threatening guards with bombs. Wapol and his soldiers prepare an ambush at the castle while Kureha explains Hiriluk's resolve to die saving others. Hiriluk arrives in the courtyard and demands the soldiers take him to the sick MD-20 so he can cure them.
