Bellemere

Bellemere has dark hair and appears in a plaid shirt while smoking a cigarette. She stands serving food with a confident smile and holds up a striped shirt labeled I AM LI ON while laughing widely.12

She is shown with a winking expression and cigarette smoke while emphasizing smooth skin. Bellemere turns away with a serious side profile and sweat drop visible during tense moments.2

Bellemere insists the girls eat heartily and dismisses poverty talk with a commanding tone. She claims oranges give her smooth skin at age 30 and reacts with pride and playfulness to the statement.3

Bellemere yells at Nami never to say they are not real family again and states blood connection is not important while speaking in a pained tone. She later apologizes for never providing motherly gifts while hugging the girls and conveys deep regret and love.34

Bellemere maintains combat readiness from her marine service and keeps a rifle available for threats. She states she will deal with Shiki if he reaches East Blue and discusses plans to build the Going Merry with assistance from Yasopp.567

She demonstrates marksmanship and protective instincts when facing danger near her home. Bellemere holds the rifle while reassuring the girls during discussions of distant threats.8

Bellemere serves food at the dining table while the girls eat heartily and discusses the beautifying power of oranges at age thirty. She laughs while holding up a handmade shirt labeled I AM LI ON and dismisses concerns about poverty by insisting the children eat without worry. After the meal she prepares to tend the orange trees and addresses the girls about wearing secondhand clothes as hand-me-downs from an older sister.9

When marine officers demand payment from Bellemere and the two children she states she will save her two children with the saved amount. She tells the villagers she cannot claim she has no family and stands resolute even when warned the choice may cost her life. Bellemere smiles through tears while affirming the girls are her children and wishes to be called their mother.10

Bellemere tells Nojiko and Nami not to let anyone beat them and that even girls must be strong. She later whispers I love you with a heart while falling and expresses final maternal affection to the girls.114

Genzo directly addresses Bellemere about her marine background and urges her to fight as a former marine. Bellemere stands protectively in front of young Nami and Nojiko while claiming them as her children.16415

Bellemere yells at Genzo to stay away from baby Nami because his face frightens the child. Genzo responds by placing a pinwheel on his head to make the baby smile and succeeds in eliciting laughter from Nami. In later years Nojiko notes that Nami obtained a new tattoo design combining an orange and a pinwheel after Genzo no longer needed his own pinwheel.17

Nami recalls Bellemere smiling at her dream of seeing a map of the world and calling a map of the island the first step toward that dream. After the loss of belongings including the mikan trees Nami hugs the recovered trees with visible happiness upon their return in Water Seven.1819

Young Nami cries out desperately that Bellemere cannot die during the confrontation where a gun is pointed. She repeatedly screams Bellemere's name amid the chaos with tears and an open mouth while running. Memories surface of Arlong declaring the island belongs to his group and telling Bellemere to die for her worthless love.2018

Nami remembers the hunger and forced map drawing under Arlong's rule along with ridicule from the fishmen who call her a thief and threaten to shoot. She recalls the long count of money saved over time while working through the trauma of the events surrounding Bellemere.18
