Dadan snaps that looking after him is a pain for them too and says if he does not want to be there, he can get out and starve to death. Luffy complains, "I'm still hungry! I want some meat!!" Dadan explains that the meat is all from a buffalo Ace caught, and that Ace puts some on the table while the bandits do too because times are tough. She tells Luffy that starting tomorrow he will be working to death too, doing cleaning, laundry, shoe shining, polishing weapons, looting, swindling, and killing, and warns him not to mention any of it to Garp.

Dadan gives Luffy the bare minimum for survival: "Once a day, you'll get one bowl of rice!! And one cup of water!!" She says that is all they will give him and that if he wants anything else, he must get it himself, adding, "And don't grow anything without permission!!" Luffy begins crying, and Dadan yells, "What the hell!!? This is where you start crying!!!" But Luffy explains he is used to being thrown into the jungle by Garp, where there is forest food like earthworms, frogs, and mushrooms. He says he will be a pirate someday and has to be able to do this much. Then he runs out after Ace, telling the bandits he is going to be a pirate.

Luffy follows Ace through the forest, calling, "Hey!! I'm Luffy!! I'm not angry about you spitting on me anymore!!" Ace ignores him. Luffy tries again, remembering Shanks laughing with him, and shouts, "Why are you laughing?!! You look so lame!! I just got some booze on me, it's not something to get worked up about, right?" Back in the present pursuit, Luffy says, "It's not a big deal, so let's be friends!! Where are you going?" Ace keeps walking without replying. Suddenly a giant animal bursts from the forest and sends Luffy flying as he screams, but Ace continues on.

Ace continues through the dangerous mountain path without helping Luffy. Luffy is attacked and knocked around by the wilderness, then keeps chasing him. Ace crosses a long rope bridge high over a deep ravine, and Luffy follows while panting. Ace cuts or damages the bridge behind him, and Luffy plunges down into the gap, screaming "Gyaaaa" and "Aaaa-ahhhh..." Ace watches from above, expression unchanged, as Luffy disappears into the gorge. Dadan is furious and worried, saying it is bad that they lost Luffy on the first day. She says if Luffy really died they will just tell Garp it was an accident, and complains that they have already given up on looking after Ace. A bandit warns, "He's the son of a demon, you know!? If the government ever found out, what do you think would happen to us!!?" One week later, after the bandits have assumed the worst, someone runs in shouting for Boss Dadan.

Luffy finally returns after a week, battered, scratched, and exhausted, but alive. The bandits shout, "Luffy came back!!!" and Dadan is stunned: "He was... still alive!? Where the hell did you go!?" Luffy explains that he was chased by wolves at the bottom of the valley. Dadan tells him he will work hard tomorrow and to go sleep, but the next morning Luffy immediately follows Ace again, asking, "Where are you going today, Ace!!?" He raises both arms and says, "Take me too!! Let's be friends!!" Ace still gives him only silence.

Luffy keeps chasing Ace day after day despite the danger. When Ace runs ahead, Luffy shouts, "Wait!! I'm not losing you today!!" Dadan yells after him, "Hey, Luffy!! You've got chores to do!!" and fumes that the kid will not listen to a word she says. On the eighth day, Luffy is chased by a crocodile-like beast. After the tenth day, he is crushed under falling rocks. He keeps losing Ace, but day after day he gets back up and tries again, each time pushing through injuries and the dangers of Mt. Corbo because he refuses to give up on following him.

One month passes, then two months. On rainy days and windy days, Luffy keeps following Ace through the mountain, through rivers, cliffs, and beasts. He is bitten, chased, bruised, soaked, and exhausted, but continues despite his injuries. After three months, Luffy finally pushes through the forest and finds Ace's trail, saying, "Ah... I'm out of the forest..." He emerges near the strange place beyond Mt. Corbo and sees Ace meeting someone else. This page shows the long grind of Luffy's persistence, turning his childish request for friendship into something Ace can no longer ignore.

North of the Dadan family's base, past Mt. Corbo, lies Gray Terminal. The narration says it is filled with mountains of garbage, that a foul stench always hangs in the air, and that fires started by the sun spew smoke. Unwanted things are collected there, as well as people. The place is lawless, with no doctors, and crimes and diseases are rampant. Luffy reaches the edge of the dump and groans, "Oehh!! This place stinks!" He calls, "Sabo!! You here!?" and Sabo answers Ace, apologizing for being late. Ace grins that Sabo must already have done a job in town, while Luffy realizes, "This is... Gray Terminal."

Sabo is introduced as a ten-year-old boy who lives in Gray Terminal. He proudly shows Ace a stack of money and says, "Uwah!! Wow!! This is even better than mine!!" Ace says he got his money near the gates, and Sabo explains, "I stole it from some punks!! Maybe they were carrying it for some merchant ships." Ace is impressed that Sabo beat him today too. The boys reveal their shared dream: they have already been saving for five years, but still have a long way to go because they want to buy a pirate ship someday. Ace wonders whether it takes ten million or a hundred million, while Sabo warns him to shut the chest quickly before someone sees it.

Luffy overhears Ace and Sabo talking about buying a pirate ship and throws his arms up, shouting, "A pirate ship!? Are you guys gonna be pirates!? So am I!!!" Ace and Sabo are shocked. Ace asks if this is the Luffy he told Sabo about, and realizes Luffy finally followed him all the way there by taking paths hardly used. Luffy asks whether Sabo is Ace's friend and immediately says, "Be my friend too!" Ace tells him to shut up. The two older boys panic because Luffy has found out about their secret treasure. Sabo says if they leave him alone, he will tell someone, and Ace realizes his plan to make Luffy stay at the mountain training backfired.

Ace decides the only way to protect the secret is to kill Luffy. He says, "Let's kill him," and Sabo agrees, "Yeah, let's do it." Luffy is horrified and screams that he did not think they were really going to kill him, yelling, "Help me!! I don't wanna die!!" Ace tells him to shut up, but Sabo hesitates because he has never killed anyone before and does not know how. Luffy's cries echo through the forest. Someone hears voices and says it sounds like kids, so Ace and Sabo panic. Sabo tells Ace to undo the rope quickly and warns that if they do not get out of there, the strangers will find their treasure.

The Bluejam Pirates arrive, led on this page by the crew member Porshemi. They say Ace and Sabo are already famous around Gray Terminal and identify Ace as the one who stole their money. Porshemi is described as a subordinate of Captain Bluejam who carries a real sword, scalps defeated opponents while they are still alive, and is considered crazy even by those around him. Luffy cries, "Help me, Ace!!" and Ace realizes, "That idiot said my name!!" Porshemi immediately asks if Luffy just said Ace and whether he knows him. Luffy admits, "He's my friend!! Ah, he was about to kill me, though..." Ace and Sabo can only watch, horrified, as Luffy's honesty gives the pirates exactly the connection they need.

Porshemi interrogates Luffy about the stolen money. He says Ace stole some of their money and ran, then asks Luffy, "You know where it is?" Ace and Sabo hide nearby, silently begging Luffy not to say anything because the pirates will take all their treasure. Luffy, sweating and shaking, answers, "I... I dunno." Ace realizes Luffy is such a bad liar, but Luffy still refuses to give up the secret. Porshemi laughs and says that if Luffy does not know now, he will soon know: "Kukukuku!! We'll jog your memory." Ace and Sabo watch in alarm as Porshemi drags Luffy away and Luffy shouts, "What? Hey!! Lemme go!! Where are you taking me!? Damn it!!"
