Inside a large mansion, a butler with sheep-like hair and horns, Merry, approaches Kaya. He holds a wrapped rectangular box and says, "Ojou-sama... The special order you placed in the neighboring town has arrived, here's the item. Is there anything else that you will need?" Kaya, holding a book, smiles and replies, "Yes, thank you! That's all! I'm so sorry that I had you run all the way over there." Merry bows slightly, "You're welcome. I love to be of service!" Merry then smiles warmly, asking, "That's a present right? I'm sure Clahador will be very happy!" Kaya looks thoughtful and happy, saying, "Yes, tomorrow will be Clahador's 3rd year anniversary since he came to this place. He takes really good care of me."

Usopp runs frantically through the village streets, shouting a warning. "Everyone! Please listen! There are pirates coming...!! Pirates are really going to attack us tomorrow!!" The villagers, however, are furious. A large group of them chases after Usopp, wielding brooms, pans, and sticks. They yell, "Only an idiot would believe you! We're not going to fall for that crap again!" Usopp looks back over his shoulder as he runs, insisting, "But this time it's for real!" One angry villager with a pan shouts, "I'm going to get you this time!" Usopp, sweating and desperate, mutters, "Fine, if you don't believe me!" The villagers stop, panting and glaring after him. "That bastard! He runs so fast!"

At the base of a cliff, Usopp's three young crewmates, Tamanegi, Piiman, and Ninjin, react with absolute shock. Piiman cries, "Oh... my god!!" Ninjin adds, "They're going to kill Kaya-san?" Tamanegi asks, "The village is gonna be attacked?!? Is that true? Straw-hat niichan!?" A wide shot shows the three boys standing before Luffy, who is sitting on the ground, with Zoro and Nami standing nearby. Luffy answers simply, "Yep. That's what the guy said. There's no doubt about it." Zoro looks down at Luffy and asks, "Oh yeah, why were you sleeping over there anyways?" Luffy tilts his head, looking confused, "Hmmm... I remember I was on top of the cliff..." The three boys clench their fists in anger. Ninjin says, "That bastard butler was a bad guy!" Piiman adds, "No wonder he gave me the creeps!" Tamanegi concludes, "And that hypnotist was a fake as well!"

Nami smiles at the three boys, Tamanegi, Piiman, and Ninjin. She says, "So, that's why your captain... ran to the village in such a hurry to warn them!" Zoro, sitting on the ground with Luffy beside him, tells the boys, "Well that's good, you guys are the first to know, you should escape while you can! It'll be too late when the pirates get here!" The three boys look determined but panicked. Piiman says, "Yeah! Then we should run away!" Ninjin adds, "Yes! Pack up our important stuffs!" Tamanegi lists his priorities, sweating: "My allowance money, and snacks... and my model ship..." They immediately sprint away in a cloud of dust. One of them yells, "Gotta hurry!!" Running sound effects fill the panel. Luffy and Zoro watch them go. Luffy suddenly looks alarmed, saying, "Oh no!" Zoro asks, "What now?" Luffy grabs his head in absolute panic, screaming, "Even the butcher will soon run away!" SFX: "AAAA..."

Usopp stands outside a large iron gate, panting heavily: "Huff... Huff... Huff... Huff..." He looks around nervously. Beyond the gate is a massive, luxurious mansion. Two guards in black suits stand watch at the entrance. Inside the mansion, Kaya is near her window when she hears a sound. "Knock knock! Knock knock!" She opens the window to find Usopp outside. She smiles happily, "Usopp-san!! I was worried that you wouldn't come back again...." Usopp, looking frantic and sweating, interrupts her: "Kaya! Hurry! You have to escape! Or else you will be killed!" Kaya looks confused, asking, "What's wrong?" Usopp yells desperately, "You were lied by that butler!! He's actually a pirate!!"

Kaya leans out her window, looking bewildered. "Wait... Wait a minute... What are you talking about? How can Clahador be a pirate?" Usopp, still sweating and urgent, explains, "It's true! I accidentally overheard......a conversation that guy had with his comrade." As Usopp speaks, a shadowy image of Clahador (Kuro) adjusting his glasses appears behind him for emphasis. Usopp declares, "That butler came to work for you because of your wealth! He became your butler in order to obtain your family's wealth!" Kaya looks shocked, a small "...!!" escaping her. She asks, "What are you talking about, Usopp-san?" Usopp continues his frantic warning, "Tomorrow morning, he's going to let his pirate crew to attack our village! And then he's going to come and kill you!" A close-up shows Kaya's face, completely stunned and speechless. "!"

Kaya Usopp Kuro

Usopp yells with wide eyes, "If you don't leave now! It will be too late!" Kaya stands at the window, her face shadowed and looking down. She says coldly, "Usopp-san! I was wrong about you!" Usopp is taken aback, a small "!" next to him. Down at the front gate, the two guards hear the shouting. One guard looks back and says, "Hey, what's that noise? Go check it out!" The other guard, looking annoyed, replies, "Shit! Its that kid again!" Usopp hears them and looks surprised, "What?!" Kaya looks up, visibly upset with tears in her eyes. "I can't believe you are doing this to get your revenge on Clahador..." A wide shot shows the side of the mansion. Usopp is perched on a tree branch right outside Kaya's second-story window. Kaya continues speaking from the window, "I know he was a bit harsh on you... Talking about your father that way... but..."

Kaya looks down from her window, her expression a mix of anger and disappointment. She says, "How can you make up lies about him like that? I can't believe you're this kind of a person!" Usopp looks up at her, shocked and sweating. Kaya continues speaking from off-panel, "In the past, I always listened to your lies, and turned them into hopes and dreams. They made my life fill up with happiness." She looks down sadly, adding, "I really liked the lies you made up!" As Usopp listens, looking desperate, Kaya's voice continues, "But... now you're using it for revenge, and using it to harm a good person..." Usopp stammers, "It's... It's not like that..." Kaya, with tears forming in her eyes, shouts, "You're a terrible person!" Usopp yells back frantically, "Listen to me... I'm telling you the truth!"

Inside the mansion, a door opens with a loud "GACHA!!" sound. A guard enters the room and asks, "Ojou-sama, what's going on!?" Kaya turns to look at him. Outside, the two guards in black suits have grabbed Usopp by the arms. Usopp struggles wildly, yelling, "Wahh! Wait, let go of me! I haven't finished talking yet!" One of the guards says, "Don't worry, we'll throw this pest out!" Usopp continues to fight back, shouting, "Damn it! Let me go... you morons!!" He manages to break free, twisting one guard's arm. The guard cries out, "Aghh! My arm..." Kaya watches from her window in shock, a "!!?" bubble next to her. The second guard glares at Usopp angrily and says, "You little brat! You're asking for it!" as he prepares to attack.

Usopp quickly draws his slingshot, pulling the band back and saying, "PULL OUT..." The angry guard charges at him, yelling, "DIE!" Usopp holds his aim, saying, "STRETCH..." In a large central panel, Usopp releases the slingshot, firing a projectile that smacks directly into the charging guard's face with a loud impact. Usopp yells, "YOU IDIOTS!!" while the guard cries out, "ARGH!!" The guard falls backward. In the bottom panel, the first guard is getting back up, cursing, "DAMN IT!" Usopp immediately aims his slingshot at him, pulling the band back again and saying, "STRETCH..."

Kaya leans out of her window, yelling desperately, "USOPP-SAN! STOP IT!!" Usopp releases his slingshot with a "SHOOT...", firing another projectile that hits the second guard squarely in the face. The guard yells "ARGH!!" as he is knocked backward. A wide shot shows Usopp standing in the courtyard, slingshot in hand, with both guards lying unconscious on the ground, smoke rising from their heads. Kaya looks down in disbelief, thinking, "What happened? Both guards are..." Usopp looks back up at the window, his face full of urgent panic. He pleads, "KAYA! PLEASE BELIEVE ME! HURRY AND LEAVE THIS VILLAGE! BEFORE THE BUTLER COMES BACK!" Kaya, looking deeply distressed and clutching her hands to her chest, thinks to herself, "This isn't the Usopp-san that I used to know..."

The villagers chase Usopp, shouting insults. One yells, "How dare you scare us like that?" Another shouts, "Butler? Huh! What a story!" A third says, "Are you still asleep!?" Usopp flees, sweating and panicked, thinking, "Why can't they believe me!?" He looks back over his shoulder while running through the village. Later, outside Kaya's mansion by her window, Kaya stands in shock, saying, "Is it true that... you said that Clahador is a pirate?" Usopp, desperate, grabs her arm and says, "Yes! It's true! You gotta run for your life! He will kill you!" Kaya, furious and hurt, slaps him hard across the face.

A close-up shows Usopp's face, his cheek red and swollen from Kaya's slap. He looks completely stunned. Kaya is shown in tears, looking heartbroken and angry as she says, "Look at you... How is it possible for me to believe you like this?" Suddenly, Merry, the butler, appears aiming a pistol directly at Usopp. He warns, "Get out of here! Or else I will shoot you..." Usopp looks shocked, and Kaya yells, "No!!" In the bottom panel, a loud gunshot rings out with a "BANG!!" Usopp flinches as the bullet is fired, and the charging villagers in the background look startled by the sudden gunfire.

Kaya is shown holding Merry's arm, having pushed the gun away to ruin his aim. She yells, "You almost hit him!!" Merry, still holding the smoking gun, replies, "But... he was hurting you, Ojou-sama..." The angry villagers run down the street, chasing after Usopp. They shout, "Usopp is getting away!" and "Bastard! Stay still!!" A close-up shows Usopp's hand clutching his left arm, which is bleeding from a graze wound. He mutters, "Damn it..." as blood falls with a "DRIP DRIP". Usopp runs frantically, tears in his eyes, thinking, "Why won't they believe me!?" The villagers continue their pursuit, yelling, "Hey, stop!!" and "Usopp, you're not going to get away!!" Merry stands at the mansion gate, pointing down the road and shouting to the villagers, "Don't let him get away! Everybody, he went that way!" In a small panel below, Kaya collapses to her knees with a "DROP". Merry rushes to her side, asking, "Ah! Ojou-sama, are you alright?"

A wide view shows the quiet village outskirts. Usopp walks alone down a dirt path, his head hung low. A thought bubble reads, "Jango... will attack the village, when dawn breaks!" A bird flies overhead, cawing "KA... KA..." Usopp stops and looks back over his shoulder toward the village, his expression somber. He thinks, "Idiots....!" A close-up shows Usopp's face; he is crying, his teeth gritted in frustration and despair as he groans, "UUUUGH.....!!!" In the bottom left panel, Usopp's young crewmates, Tamanegi, Piiman, and Ninjin, are waiting by a wooden fence. One of them waves and calls out, "OI! CAPTAIN USOPP!!!" Usopp looks up in surprise.

Usopp Tamanegi Piiman Ninjin

Usopp wipes his tears away with his arm, a sound effect reading "WIPE WIPE". He turns around to face his three young crewmates, along with Luffy, Zoro, and Nami, putting on a fake smile and saying, "HEY! HI EVERYBODY!" The three boys are shocked to see him. Piiman and Ninjin exclaim, "HOW CAN YOU STILL BE ALIVE?" and "STILL ALIVE?" Luffy, standing casually, mentions, "I JUST WOKE UP," with a small note indicating he was asleep the whole time. Tamanegi urgently tells Usopp, "CAPTAIN! WE HEARD ABOUT THE PIRATES!" and Piiman adds, "WE'VE GOT TO WARN EVERYONE!" Usopp looks stunned, repeating, "WARN EVERYONE...?" He recalls the painful events that just happened: Kaya's tearful face asking, "HOW IS IT POSSIBLE FOR ME TO BELIEVE YOU LIKE THIS?", the angry villagers chasing him shouting, "GET HIM! DON'T LET HIM GET AWAY!!", and others laughing, "WAHAHAHA! WHAT PIRATES...?" As he remembers this, he clutches his injured arm, which throbs with "PAIN! PAIN....".

Usopp suddenly throws his head back and bursts into loud, exaggerated laughter, accompanied by a booming "DO--N!!" sound effect. He declares, "JUST LIKE ALL THE OTHER TIMES, OF COURSE IT WAS JUST A LIE!" He continues his fabrication, claiming, "I WAS JUST HAVING MY REVENGE ON THAT BUTLER, BY MAKING UP STORIES ABOUT HIM BEING A PIRATE!" Luffy looks at him curiously with a "HMM?", while Nami and Zoro stare at him in silence. The three boys are taken aback. Ninjin yells, "WHATTTT!? IT WAS JUST A LIE?" Piiman complains, "MAN! I THOUGHT SOMETHING BIG WAS GOING TO HAPPEN!" Tamanegi adds, "EVEN THE STRAW-HAT NIICHAN HELPED CAPTAIN USOPP LIE TO US!" The boys look deeply disappointed. Ninjin scolds him, "CAPTAIN SHOULDN'T MAKE UP LIES JUST BECAUSE OF THIS. THAT'S NOT HONORABLE!" Piiman agrees, "YEA, I FEEL THE SAME WAY!" Tamanegi chimes in, "ME TOO! NO MATTER HOW MEAN THAT BUTLER IS... CAPTAIN, I NEVER THOUGHT YOU WOULD MAKE UP LIES TO HURT OTHERS".

The three boys turn their backs and start walking back toward the village. Ninjin says, "LETS GO HOME!" Piiman agrees, "YEAH! GO HOME AND EAT DINNER!" and Tamanegi wonders, "WONDER WHAT'S FOR DINNER." Usopp watches them leave in silence, while Luffy, Zoro, and Nami stand behind him. A crescent moon hangs in the sky. Usopp sits down on the grassy ground, his back to the others. Luffy asks him directly, "EVEN SO... THE FACT THAT THOSE PIRATES ARE GOING TO ATTACK, IS THE TRUTH, RIGHT?" Usopp, looking downcast, replies, "BECAUSE I USED TO LIE ALL THE TIME... NO ONE BELIEVES A WORD I SAY NOW!" He continues, "THEY'RE DEFINITELY GOING TO ATTACK IN THE MORNING. BUT NO ONE BELIEVES ME! THEY ALL THINK TOMORROW WILL JUST BE ANOTHER PEACEFUL DAY..."

Usopp suddenly stands up, clenching his fist with fierce determination. A loud "DON!!" sound effect emphasizes his resolve. He declares loudly, "SINCE EVERYONE THAT THINKS I'M A LIAR, I'LL PROTECT THIS VILLAGE MYSELF AND PREVENT THE PIRATES FROM ATTACKING!" He continues, "THEN THIS WILL JUST BECOME ONE OF MY LIES! IN ORDER TO PROTECT THE VILLAGE,". Below, Nami looks slightly surprised, Zoro watches calmly, and Luffy breaks into a wide, approving smile. In the final panel, Usopp sits back down, clutching his bleeding arm. He looks down, his expression a mix of sadness and resolve, as he mutters, "ALTHOUGH THEY... FIRED GUNS AT ME.... AND THEY CHASED AFTER ME WITH BROOMSTICKS... HERE... IN THE VILLAGE WHERE I GREW UP!"

Chapter 27 summary

At the cliff base the three boys hear the news from Luffy and Zoro while Nami notes Usopp's earlier warning. Usopp reaches Kaya's window and tells her the butler is a pirate planning to kill her for her wealth, yet she refuses to believe him and accuses him of revenge. Guards seize Usopp, who fights them off with his slingshot until Kaya orders him to stop. Merry fires a pistol at Usopp, Kaya knocks the shot off target, and the bleeding Usopp flees while villagers pursue. Alone on the path Usopp recalls the disbelief, then meets his crew and the Straw Hats and loudly claims the pirate story was only a lie for revenge. The three boys turn away in disappointment and start walking home.
