Chapter 574 summary
Akainu’s magma fist pierces Ace through the stomach as Ace shields Luffy on the battlefield. Pirates and Marines react in horror while the news spreads instantly through Buggy’s broadcast. Akainu withdraws and prepares another strike, but Jimbei blocks him with a water attack and declares he will hold the admiral back at any cost. Garp lunges forward only to be restrained by Sengoku, while Vista and Marco launch a combined assault that fails to stop Akainu. Luffy cradles the collapsing Ace, who repeatedly apologizes and explains that he only wanted to live because of his brothers. Ace recalls the hatred directed at him as Roger’s son, thanks Dadan through Luffy, and states he has lived without regrets because he finally knows it was all right for him to be born. Ace smiles and thanks everyone for loving him before his body goes still in Luffy’s arms. Luffy remains kneeling in silence over Ace’s body as the surrounding battle noise fades away.
