Blackbeard
Blackbeard is a pirate captain also known as Marshall D. Teach who leads the Blackbeard Pirates. He began as a member of the Whitebeard Pirates before striking out independently, later becoming a Shichibukai successor and then a Yonko. His goals center on conquering the world, claiming the One Piece, and acquiring multiple Devil Fruit powers through ability hunting. He is known for confronting Luffy, defeating Ace, infiltrating Impel Down, battling Whitebeard at Marineford, and establishing control over Pirate Island Beehive.
Appearance
Blackbeard wears a black hat with skull patterns along with a dark fur coat during his early encounters. His face shows scars and a fierce grin with wide eyes when leaning forward in conversation. He carries a bottle while walking and maintains an open coat revealing his chest in later scenes.12
In more recent appearances Blackbeard displays a green headband across his forehead and multiple jeweled rings on his right hand. His wild black hair and beard frame a face with bared teeth during laughter, and he extends his hand forward with darkness powers active.34
Personality
Blackbeard frequently laughs with a loud ZEHAHAHA while expressing confidence in his plans and the coming new era. He shouts motivational orders to his crew during tunnel digging and reacts with fury to any perceived insult about his appearance.56
He calmly invites others to join his cause of world conquest yet rejects those he deems weak without hesitation. Blackbeard mocks respect for past ranks and declares his intention to become the Pirate King while dismissing indirect talk.78
Abilities and powers
Blackbeard possesses the Yami Yami Fruit which creates a black hole effect that draws in and crushes objects with infinite force. He activates Black Hole to collapse town structures and later uses Liberation to release stored debris in an explosion.910
After defeating Whitebeard he gains the Gura Gura Fruit power and publicly claims ownership of the earthquake ability. He unleashes quake attacks that cause widespread destruction on Marineford and demonstrates dual Devil Fruit abilities to witnesses.1112

Blackbeard first gained notice when his crew annihilated a country several months before his street meeting with Luffy. Dalton identified the pirate captain responsible as Blackbeard during that period of destruction. Blackbeard arrived on Winner Island during a clash with the Heart Pirates and activated Black Vortex after his crew deployed apple bombs. He later observed events from a high platform on Hachinosu while his crew captured Garp yet saw Koby escape. Blackbeard yelled angrily at Pizarro demanding an explanation for the escape and laughed while discussing the consolation prize of Garp.212223

Blackbeard maintains complex ties with former associates from his time among the Whitebeard Pirates. He hid under Whitebeard's protection without seeking the captain position yet later inflicted a lasting wound on the man who once sheltered him. On Banaro Island Ace uses Fire Gun against Blackbeard who counters with a dark technique labeled Higan. Blackbeard seizes Ace midair and nullifies his Devil Fruit powers on contact before absorbing and redirecting the fire attack.179
At Marineford Blackbeard activates Black Hole on the ground and fights Whitebeard directly. Whitebeard stabs him with a naginata yet Blackbeard later claims the Gura Gura power after Whitebeard's defeat.3411
